eRad
well i think it's really cool... i mean even if you are reluctant to believe his motivations were heartfelt, then at least consider the positive effect it had on the family... they won't be questioning his motives... they'll just be a appreciative of something he did to make this tragedy a little bit easier on them

chimera963
wonder if the case was reversed and it all happened over a Microsoft Product??? Ok Ok, I am bad but just a thought...what would have been MS's reaction...??? 586169652 Steve Jobs is the best, i cant believe someone was killed over an mp3 player, geez that sucks. But I know its a bit off topic, but yeah, Microsofts reaction would be nothing. or maybe thinking a bit more comical, bill gates at their doors step saying "we made a robotic recreation of your son, he is Christopher service pack 2 Home edition, enjoy o and make sure you don't make him do to much or his eyes will go blue and he'll shut down" Yes, sorry about that. I feel sorry for that guy, he has the same name and age as me. Steve really is a damn kind person.

Zucker2k
I have a question: Which one of you here, would want to die over an iPod and have Steve Jobs call your father so we can all have a discussion about it on Neowin? Yea, that's what I thought. I have lost every bit of respect for Steve Jobs for this. Those of you who don't really see this as a campaign for iPod are truly blind. People get killed over cell phones and far worthless things in this country and yet the families of victims are spared the anguish of intrusion by the CEOs of the companies that make these products. All that Jobs did here was try to promote himself and his product. Where did he get the phone number of the victim's father? Is he going to apologize for everybody who gets killed over an iPod? If Steve Jobs truly wants to help anybody in this country, he needs to set up a charitable organization or something. Even Bill Gates has the Gates Foundation, what has Steve Jobs done for the poor in this country or abroad.
Kestrel
Steve Jobs has to be one of the nicest CEO's I know of.. 586169633 hehe... you don't know much about Steve Jobs' past history, do you? He is ANYTHING BUT a nice man... That said, there's no begrudging the fact that this was a nice gesture on his part.

selphj
Oh good grief. Steve Jobs' assistant called the New York times to ask for the phone number, and told them what Steve was going to do. And you people are patting him on the back for being a big humanitarian? It was publicity to make people feel good about Apple again. Nothing more. If he had wanted to be a humanitarian, he would have made an annonymous donation in the teen's name. Or anything that would have helped without putting his own name forward. I also find it really sad when you can't joke about anything anymore (aristotle-dude). The man didnt say ANYTHING against the kid or his family, or Jobs. It's sad that the kid died, but that stuff happens EVERY DAY. The joke wasn't even making fun of the kid or his family. aristotle-dude
Steve Job thinks: I know what's just right to improve our marketing. Then he asks: Secretary could you find the parents of the kid who was killed by an iPod last week and contact them? Just make up some BS, I don't care. --- Well guess this will be reported as well. 586171879 Reading comprehension is something you should work on. The father was contacted by Mr. Jobs personally after he got the number to the cell phone. It is the New York Times that is making this into a big story by inteviewing the father about the call. Apple and spokesmen for Jobs declined to comment. Why did waste enough time to write that and yet you could not be bothered to actually read the original news article? I did in fact read the article and there was no proof whatsoever. No witnesses and the man didn't even recognize SJ's voice. Now it was a joke not to be taken seriously but you are dead serious like always turning everything into an insult.
aristotle-dude
He could have recognized his voice from the many appearances he makes on on MSNBC. Yeah, it could also be a setup but it is also possible that the reporter figured it out by themselves why Steve Job's assistant called for the number and used that reporter intuition to call up and interview the father after the fact. If this was a setup, you would have expected to see press releases about it and links to it from Apple's site right away. The guy is a human being first, as are we all. Sometimes you have to be a hard-a-s-s in business but that does not mean that you stop feeling anything.

mattmatik
Pfffffft. In 1990, I remember it was very common to read or hear about kids being shot/or beat up for their Air Jordan shoes. After an 8-year old boy was murdered for his Air Jordans, both Phil Knight (CEO, Nike) and Michael Jordan made public statements about the issue (and Michael Jordan RARELY EVER gets involved in social issues) and Sports Illustrated ran a cover and a big article about the goings-on. In the article it explained how Jordan donated money to the boy's family and that he visited several of the kids who were in the hospital from being beat up. So, the point is, it's not like this hasn't been done before. Phil Knight and Michael Jordan are alot more known in their given arena of business than Steve Jobs is in his, and whether or not the intentions are good the fact remains, it's still a business move. And I was/STILL AM the biggest Michael Jordan fan and supporter...and even I can see that sometimes he is doing PR for his business investments. Maybe Jobs was doing it for the right reasons, who knows. What I find annoying is that the article on Jobs stated he told the father "I know how you feel." WTF? Does he? Has he had his son murdered over a music player?
Bling3k12
Wow, I am amazed at some of the people on here. I can't believe what I'm reading. Some of you guys truly are a-s-s-h-o-l-e-s. Somebody does something nice and you guys only think about how it could be a PR stunt. icecaveman: There are millions of people in this country, billions all across the world, how in the hell is everyone supposed to know who everyone else is and sounds like? If Steve Jobs called me, I probably wouldn't know it for awhile, but we're people who care about what these people do, so we know their voices if we've seen them speak. Who knows if this guy even knew who Steve Jobs was? Most people don't! Go outside, walk down the street, ask how many people know who he is, let alone what he sounds like. Steve may be a dick sometimes (I'm guessing a lot of you saw Pirates of Silicon Valley and are basing everything off that), and he is great at PR & marketing, but he also has a passion for the stuff that he creates and like someone else said, wouldn't want anyone to get killed over one of his products. Had this been another device, say an iRiver or a Creative device, or maybe a Microsoft device, and Bill Gates or who the **** ever is the CEO of the other companies, you guys would be like "Bill Gates, oh he's great, wouldn't see that from anyone else!". I may not like Microsoft as much as everyone else, but I use their products (Mice, XBOX, I have 3 PC's with LEGAL Windows OSes, etc., but that's not relevant) and I have outstanding respect for Bill Gates. The amount of money he's put into charity and everything else he's done make him an outstanding citizen. It's the fact that some people care, and I give people around me the benefit of a doubt that they also care. It seems some people won't put it past them to think that they may actually care, and that's sad and pathetic.

niuus
anyone else wonder how the heck he got his cell phone number  ?but indeed a nice move 586171756 Quote from article: "One of Jobs's assistants contacted a reporter for The New York Times on Monday and asked for Rose's telephone number." :shifty: Like mAcOdIn said: "what the heck does it matter? I guess if one had to choose between a society that showed fake concern for each other or a society that showed real no concern for each other the society with the fake concern would be better." Either a PR stunt or a true feeling, it is still a nice thing. For me, anyway. Kudos to Mr. Jobs. Edited July 7, 2005 by niuus
SOB BOT
To the people that think Steve Jobs did this only for publicity: In the article it says "A spokesman for Jobs declined to comment on the phone call Tuesday." Also the father Steve called was the one who wanted to talk about that in the article wasn't he? No one made him discuss it, Apple representatives weren't the ones that brought it up for publicity. The way I see it it was the father who brought this whole phone call thing into the open, maybe because he wanted to give Steve Jobs credit for being a good guy and calling him up when other people wouldn't have done it.
