jak0bk
I salute Steve Jobs. And don't try to speculate what would happen if it were a fight over a Wireless Desktop Elite or something... you have no idea. All you can do is speculate. Just salute Jobs and stop trying to bash Microsoft.
mattmatik
...Steve may be a dick sometimes (I'm guessing a lot of you saw Pirates of Silicon Valley and are basing everything off that), and he is great at PR & marketing, but he also has a passion for the stuff that he creates and like someone else said, wouldn't want anyone to get killed over one of his products.Had this been another device, say an iRiver or a Creative device, or maybe a Microsoft device, and Bill Gates or who the **** ever is the CEO of the other companies, you guys would be like "Bill Gates, oh he's great, wouldn't see that from anyone else!"... 586174645 Please excuse my shortening of your post :) I just want it to be said that I don't care who it was that was actually involved in this. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Phil Knight...any CEO, I could give 2 ****s about. They do nothing for me, I don't know them, they don't know me, they don't care about me other than getting money. That's what a CEO is and does. I've never seen Pirates of Silicon Valley, I'm just making my comments based on the fact that he is a CEO of a company that wants to make money. And if anyone thinks otherwise I really feel bad. Like I said, his intentions may have been good, who knows. Nobody knows, which is why this whole thread is garbage and pointless...I think the real story should be about the kid who died needlessly, not praising someone. nexess
Hmmm, well everyone on this board knows who Steve Jobs and Apple computer are--and obviously that makes us feel a certain way towards him and his actions--I wonder what the victim's father's reaction was--as he didnt know who Jobs was... prz
It doesn't matter if he knew who he was, he was offering condolences from his heart as a person. You are not the company you own, etc. We're all just people, k.
Nose Nuggets
damn that was some smooth PR thats all i gata say. if it was TRULY from his heart, and was beeing cencear. we wouldent have heard about it. it wouldent be in the news.

Palin
I don't think it matters if Jobs is a nice guy in general or not, (I have no idea) it wouldn't change the fact that he did a very thoughtful thing. If it was a PR stunt, I think there should be many more PR stunts like this one.
NeoXY
As nice of a gesture this is, one must question whether he's trying to save Apple's tail-end... 586169669 saving apple's tail-end of what?....because the iPod got popular?...that's crazy
NeoXY
ok, i got a box of hankies here for all you steve lovers out there.......it was blatantly a nice thing, but it was also a PR move. look at how much attention there is. and for god sake, all you uptight people get over it, do you relise how many people die every day? jesus. look at the bigger picture if u want to get serious.....or just plain shut up. damn it. it was just a joke, and yes it was pretty funny......jeeeeaasshh. 586172979 ok..that's it...you people need to get over your selves....please NOTE that Steve remained NAMELESS when he called...HE DIDN'T SAY HI! I'M STEVE JOBS...he remined NAMELESS. He simply called to say he was SORRY. The name and all of that was the aftermath... and yeah...that's real cool of him...respect.. you know business is one thing...but we're all human comes the end of the day...;) Edited July 7, 2005 by dark kyuubi

I bet the best way to remain anonymous is to call the biggest gossips in town (New York Times) and ask for the number of a person who's son had been killed over an iPod and while ur at it, why don't you tell them you're the assistant of Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer Inc.? I bet that will never make the news.

You just said it. Read the bolded quote. Jobs may be a damn freak in the business world but he's no robot. He remained nameless huh? Which would you rather have - him going "Oh, just some random kid killed for an iPod, that sucks. Next." or "That father's going through some hell, maybe I'll give him some comfort." He may not have a charitable organization, but damn, do you NEED to have one to be 'nice' and 'caring'? Some of you people need to do one simple thing - get a human heart. Not a robotic one or one full of black s*** - a caring and understanding human heart. When Gates pledges more money into his organization some ###### might say "Well he probably stole all of that money", or even this with some idiots thinking this is just a PR stunt. Let's just face it - both Gates and Jobs are humans. They do care (most likely not within business, however). If this bashing keeps up we might as well invent robots and program them to run the companies.
rbet
OK, we can't know for sure whether SJ was genuinely concerned or he was just pulling some PR stunt... heck, we don't even know whether it was SJ himself who called, and not one of his minions pretending to be him (with SJ's authorization, of course; remember the boy's father didn't recognise his voice). But being the kind of believer in human compassion that I am... I think it was a pretty good PR stunt

People like you tend to concentrate on the problem rather than the cause. The poor kid did not get killed because HE WAS CARRYING AN iPOD, PEOPLE GET KILLED FOR WAY LESS. My point is that if Jobs really wants to help prevent the occurence of such unfortunate incidents, he'll do better to invest some of his accumulated wealth into the education of some of the poor neighborhoods of America just as Gates is doing. Sure we could all argue over whether what he did was a PR stunt or not. Here's why imo its a PR stunt - Jobs cannot and will not be calling the father of every little kid who gets killed over an iPod. That still doesn't mean that he shouldn't do it. But why call the NY Times, a newspaper for the number when everyone out there knows that's the last thing you want to do if you want to remain anonymous? There are various ways you can acquire such a number if you TRULY want to remain anonymous. In the story, it was said that Jobs never revealed who he was, how then did the story leak out? amrinders87
thats well nice of him. Do you think Bill Gates would do the same if someone died in relation to a M$ product?dunno what the scenario would be like, but anyway 586171714 probably because if you look at all the money Gates is donating to charities and stuff, he does not seem like a jerk. Bennifer
There's business, and there's a kid getting killed because of a portable music player. Those that slate Jobs for marketing on this and reckon he's not so nice - wake up, business isn't nice. Any previous dealings and double crossings have no relation to him offering condolences. Mucho respect for him phoning the guy. If you leave the news articles aside from this - the only people that matter now are the parents of the dead kid. Im sure they feel somewhat better and comforted that Steve called them.
Master Shake
Even if it was a publicity stunt, which I don't think it is, he still called the guy to try and comfort him. I don't know if they even need more publicity, the ipod is doing great and I just read that apple is the 4th largest computer maker again. It would have been hard for me to call someone I didn't know and do something like that. That was really nice of Steve.
