Is shareware too expensive?

Question

how do you guys feel about this? sometimes i think 20 or 30 bucks is too much to spend for some shareware programs that are pretty limited in what they can do. don't get me wrong, they can be very useful, but i think if they charged like $15, i would actually say to myself "hey, that is worth it, help the guy out." as for examples, i'm talking about TLB, netcaptor, winzip/winrar, easy cd-da extractor, etc.

Yeah, I think that programs like Flash and Photoshop (while not exclusively shareware) are too heavily priced. And I've seen some pretty ****ty html editors out there that the authors was freakin $100 for.

Most shareware is overpriced when you concider that most have equivalent freeware versions.

For example, look at WinZip. UltimateZip even supports dragging with the right mouse button which most other shareware unzippers done (WinZip does), but its freeware.

Then again, there are other things like GoldWave where I can't find a Windows equivalent that is such good value for money.

sometimes i wonder how their sales would change if everyone dropped their prices to like 15 bucks. would people buy it then? or would they still find "other" ways of getting it?

I think it'd also help a lot if there were easier ways of paying, not everyone has a credit card. Before I had mine I could't buy most shareware even if I wanted to.

I do agree that most shareware does have (often a better) freeware equivelants. TLB & NoteTab Pro are among the few I've found worthwhile enough to buy, and both of those were about $20... well worth it, but I doubt I could/would have payed much more.

Although, even if hey did keep their prices low and have easier way to buy the product, I'm sure many people would still find "other" ways to get them.

The big priced items like Photoshop, XP Pro etc... yeah, those I think would have a LOT more sales if they lowered the pricing a bit. Both of those cost (imho) way too much.
