Academic software

Question

A long time ago, I hoped to come clean of pirating software. The one thing that stops me from doing it is the money issue. As of now, my software list is as follows:

Windows XP Pro OEM = $150

Office XP Std. Full For Students = $149

MS Frontpage = $149

Total is approximately a whopping $450, about 1/2 of my computer's value! I have heard about academically discounted software, and I wonder if I can get any as a high schooler.

Umm... isn't the money issue the only reason you would pirate released software? :p

Yes. If their software wasn't so damn expensive, then I would certainly open up my wallet for Microsoft. I found pirating software quite a bad experience, with the missing files, zip file passwords, porn banners (damn sick of looking at those), and popups.

But isn't it illegal to use OEM software unless you purchased it with a new PC from an OEM? No sense in paying to violate the EULA...

as long as you purchase hardware it's perfectly fine to get OEM. Usually you can get away with something like a floppy drive, but some places might require that you get some other things with it as well. Academic software, depending on what school you may goto, can be pretty cheap. At my school, my engineering dept has agreements with microsoft, so I can go get a free copy of most microsoft software with the exception of like office.

Yes, you are required to purchase hardware with OEM software. From what I can tell, a lot of places aren't that picky about what hardware you purchase. One site I visited had the price of some cheap hardware figured into the price of the OEM software. I don't know if you really get that hardware of not. It seemed a bit fishy.
