Shuttle Discovery Countdown Begins

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida -- Countdown clocks at the Kennedy Space Center blinked to life for the first time in 2 1/2 years Sunday as NASA made final preparations for shuttle Discovery's planned liftoff three days from now.

"Countdown for launch of Discovery is now under way," NASA spokesman George Diller said as the clocks began ticking at 6 p.m. EDT at the Florida spaceport.

The launch, set for 3:51 p.m. EDT Wednesday, will be NASA's first since the 2003 Columbia disaster.

"Discovery is in excellent shape as we prepare for Wednesday's launch," said NASA test director Jeff Spaulding.

The seven members of the Discovery crew arrived at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Saturday.

"It sure does feel good to be back in the saddle again. It's been too long," Discovery's payload manager, Scott Higginbotham, said at a news briefing.

And that's amusing becaaaaause???

Anyway, I'm pretty excited about this. Always been interested in space travel, perhaps ironically, since seeing Apollo 13. In fact my "I want to be an astronaut when I grow up," phase was spurred by the film. Back to exploring the final frontier with manned aircraft as we should be.

It's not going to -- and the curse of 13 has been suspended. ;)

I bid the astronauts good luck, and that I wish I were with them... I always wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up... I still haven't grown up yet :p

Why do you think he thought it would be amusing??

" :p " isn't " :) "

Sounds like to me that it was a quick thought about the hell NASA will go through if something will go wrong.
