Terrorist gang 'used military explosives'

By Michael Evans, Sean O?Neill and Philip Webster

A SINGLE bombmaker using high-grade military explosives is believed to be responsible for building the four devices that killed more than 50 people last week, The Times can reveal.

Similar components from the explosive devices have been found at all four murder sites, leading detectives to believe that each of the 10lb rucksack bombs was the work of one man. They also believe that the materials used were not home made but sophisticated military explosives, possibly smuggled into Britain from the Balkans.

?The nature of the explosives appears to be military, which is very worrying,? said Superintendent Christophe Chaboud, the chief of the French anti-terrorist police, who was in London to help Scotland Yard.

News of the breakthrough comes as a Times poll conducted in the aftermath of the bombings indicates that an overwhelming majority of the British public favours a tough approach to terrorist suspects. Almost 90 per cent of people want the police to be given new powers to arrest people suspected of planning terrorist acts, tighter immigration controls and strict baggage inspections.

Londoners, who bore the brunt of last Thursday?s carnage, were not as supportive of draconian measures as people in the rest of the country.

The public anger will strengthen Tony Blair?s hand as he prepares to speed up new anti-terrorist laws to help the hunt for the bombers. ?If, as the fuller picture about these incidents emerges and the investigation proceeds, it becomes clear that there are powers which the police and intelligence agencies need immediately to combat terrorism, it is plainly sensible to reserve the right to return to Parliament with an accelerated timetable,? he said.

More than 800 police officers were being drafted in to assist Scotland Yard?s anti-terrorist branch in Britain?s largest criminal inquiry. Film from 2,500 CCTV cameras in the centre of the capital is being examined and more is being taken from cameras across Greater London. Detectives are also searching for a vehicle, flat or garage that the terrorists may have used as a bomb factory.

It is understood that the examination of the No 30 bus at Tavistock Square has yielded vital fragments that have sharpened the focus of the police inquiry. Forensic pathologists have been paying particular attention to the remains of two bodies found in the mangled wreckage of the double-decker.

A senior police source said: ?There are two bodies which have to be examined in great detail because they appear to have been holding the bomb or sitting on top of it. One of those might turn out to be the bomber.? A decapitated head was found at the bus scene which has been, in Israeli experience, the sign of a suicide bomber.

The confirmed death toll stands at 52 but is expected to rise. Police family liaison officers have been assigned to 74 families. As London prepares to hold a two-minute silence and mass vigil on Thursday to commemorate its dead, 12,000 United States service personnel have been ordered not to visit the city for security reasons.

American defense chiefs faced condemnation last night for banning U.S. airmen from entering London, the Uk's DAILY MAIL wiAll 12,000 members of the U.S. Air Force stationed in Britain have been told not to travel inside inner London because of the risk of further bomb attacks.

The news provoked fury from British MPs who pointed out that the UK had been America's staunchest ally in the wake of September 11.

They said it handed a symbolic victory to the terrorists.to the terrorists.

Even as news of the order emerged yesterday, President Bush was promising that America 'will not retreat in the face of terrorists', and voicing his solidarity with Londoners. Shortly after thebombings he declared in his weekly radio address: 'In this dark hour, the people of Great Britain can know that the American people stand with them.'

But yesterday U.S. officials were justifying the travel ban as a 'prudent' move. 'The security of our people is our main concern,' they said.

MPs said the spectacle of the world's most powerful armed forces being too scared to walk the streets of London was a symbolic victory for the terrorists.

The message that the city was unsafe for Americans would also have a devastating impact on the tourist industry, which relies heavily on the 3.6million U.S. visitors each year.

The order to U.S.A.F. personnel, who form the bulk of America's military presence in Britain, was issued on Friday. It applies whether they are on or off duty.

Even those with urgent business in the capital, such as visiting their embassy or the Ministry of Defence, must seek special permission.

Families and civilian staff at U.S. bases have also been 'strongly advised' to avoid London, and a number of theatre trips or sightseeing visits have been cancelled, the paper claims.

It IS kinda curious as to why the US would remove troops from London when it won't remove troops from Iraq/Afghanistan?

Dude its not an order to remove them from London, but rather its an order to avoid being seen by, and consequently blown up by, the terrorists who were responsible for the London terrorist attack. Let me explain the memo this way, in plain english:

ORDER to USAF Personnel,

Stay out of London unless you want the terrorists to see you and blow you up, which they will do because they HATE YOU.

Regards,

Your commander.

If anything the order will PROTECT BRITISH CITIZENS by reducing their exposure to being around high value targets like US SERVICEMEN.

Now do you understand?

Hmm ok so now its ok for Britan to put more Laws into place without people even being even sceptical. More control for the goverment. Maybe the next move will be moving into some Eastern country and taking over its oil resources.

They have a very good idea what they're doing, and in terms of what they planned on doing, they did it very well.

Unintelligent drivel like the comments above won't help anyone do anything other than exacerbate the situation.

These aren't infantile games they're playing, these are very grown up points they're trying to make, right or wrong. I don't see anyone trying to defend them because of course they don't have a leg to stand on in justifying what they do. Lets talk about them appropriately, shall we, and not descend into schoolyard name-calling which is where this kind of behaviour originates when infantile anger and rage, tantrums, are manifest in supposedly grown up "adults".

Grow up.

That's the big danger that results from constant terrorist activity. The more a government exerts control to try to eliminate terrorism, and the more said government's citizens cede that control in order to feel "safe", the closer we come to the Orwellian society everyone fears.

The US order to US military personell is nothing new. Everytime there has been an terrorist incident this is issued.

Madrid etc was the same so nothing new.

Interesting that it was military classed explosives but in all honesty it doesnt surprise me.

I dont know about you guys but i am questioning this whole terrible event, something just doesnt ring true. (maybe im getting synical in my old age).

It wouldnt surprise me to see a daily Status alert scheme be introduced like USA had after the 9/11 atrocities (nice way to keep fear in public mind, then introduce draconian martial law, ID cards etc also)

I dont like the way this current goverment are trying to control everything, even the news are saying oooh worst incident since the blitz or since 9/11. err no sorry not even same league.

Have we forgot about all the bombings in the 70s & 80s by the IRA (Hyde Park, Omagh, Brighton). These bombings left much more devastation and injuries than the latest incidents. I think the reason the underground bombs were more damaging wa sbecasue the explosion was in an enclosed space. The bus one wasnt really that bad in damage done compared to say Hyde park or other city centre occurrences half of the bus was not destroyed which leads me to believe the explosions weere small or incendury in nature. More for effect than destruction.

It is just heartbreaking that innocent civilians died in this horror may their families find peace of mind and somehow recover from losing loved ones in such a sickening way.

It's whatever you want to see. Like those paintings you fold in half and say what you see in the shapes.
