red8Rain
Not sure if anyone else has experience this but a google search turns up to be useless as the landfill. I am using windows xp w/ sp2 and latest updates (from my company's WUS server), norton corp. edtion v10, virus def is 7/11/05 (latest), using IE 6.x, FireFox 1.0.4, and recently used Netscape 8.0 (which integrated both IE and FireFox under one roof). In the past week, everytime I open any of the aboves web browser, it would kick that process into 99% and the websites just sit there and load and load and load ... it makes it feel like I am on a 14.4 instead of a dedicated T1 data line to the internet. I have also ran S&D, microsoft anti-spyware, ad-aware, and hijack this ... anyone else experiencing this? It isn't isolated to IE, its effectiving FireFox and Netscape 8.0 as well. Every other process gets a bit of delay but nothing as bad as browsing the Internet ... any thoughts or suggestions? Like I said, I googled for the info but ended up at a lot of site that are bashing microsoft or lamers saying that you need to get the latest updates from Microsoft. I have the lates of everything. OPaul
Do you have a large HOSTS file? If so disable the DNS service.
red8Rain
nope HOSTS file is normal. DHCP and DNS is done via Windows 2003 standard server.
ThePast
The below excerpts from the Netscape v.8 EULA gives good reason to be suspicious of Netscape. IMPORTANT NOTE: WHEN YOU INSTALL NETSCAPE 8 YOU WILL BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO INSTALL ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE PRODUCTS FROM THIRD PARTY PROVIDERS. A LIST OF THE AVAILABLE THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE PRODUCTS WILL BE PROVIDED DURING INSTALLATION. USE OF EACH AVAILABLE THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE PRODUCT IS GOVERNED BY ITS OWN END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT. THOSE LICENSE AGREEMENTS WILL BE PRESENTED FOR YOUR REVIEW AND ACCEPTANCE DURING INSTALLATION OF EACH SUCH THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE PRODUCT. NETSCAPE 8 END-USER LICENSE AGREEMENT Redistribution or Rental Not Permitted THIS IS A LEGALLY BINDING AGREEMENT BETWEEN YOU (EITHER AN INDIVIDUAL OR A SINGLE ENTITY) AND NETSCAPE COMMUNICATIONS CORPORATION ("NETSCAPE"). AOL INSTANT MESSENGER ("AIM") AND AN AOL MEDIA PLAYER ENGINE ("MEDIA PLAYER") ARE INCLUDED WITHIN THE NETSCAPE 8 BROWSER. THE EXECUTABLE VERSIONS OF THE NETSCAPE 8 BROWSER, AIM, AND THE MEDIA PLAYER ARE REFERRED TO COLLECTIVELY HEREIN AS THE "BROWSER." <snip> AUTOMATIC FEEDBACK. You agree that the Browser may periodically check your computer system for, and report back, without additional notice to you, information relating to your use of the Browser, including, for example, information relating to the frequency of your use of the Browser, your Browser configuration settings, and information on computer errors, malfunctions or other abnormalities occurring during your use of the Browser. The Netscape Browser team may use the information for such purposes as diagnosing performance issues with the Browser, improving the reliability of the download and install process, and improving its products and services to users generally. This information will not be tied to any information that would identify you personally. Now, I don't think that installing Netscape with the bundled Junk Ware would have such an impact on your connection but I would not rule out the possibility. Especially when considering that it is AOL with it's hands of death. Also did you make a update of Norton around the same time that the problems started? It would not be the first time Norton is a nightmare for one user while it don't cause problems for another. Since you use XP sp2 activate the XP firewall and then shut down anything related to Norton (remember to turn on again when done). Then try if things work better, if so at least you have isolated the problem. Edited July 12, 2005 by ThePast
red8Rain
The problem happened prior to installing Netscape 8.0. Windows XP firewall is disabled via GPO and yeah, I uninstalled Norton, still the same problem. However, restarting machine in safe mode with networking seem to work fine, seems to anyways. red8Rain
Quick update to this problem I was having in my network. It turned out that a 3rd party software called spector was causing the problem. The logging that this program set was way too high, causing IE, FireFox, and Netscape to chock. We reduced the logging size dramatically and all the web browser are running smoothly. When spector released their update, the updated forced the logging size to be increased. Guess not all problems are related with IE or Microsoft, who would of thought!
