Sydney Ranked World's Best City

Recommended Posts

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Australia's biggest city, Sydney, has again been named the world's best city by readers of the U.S. magazine Travel and Leisure.

It is the eighth time in 10 years that Sydney, known for its iconic opera house, harbor bridge and stunning beaches, has topped the list.

It was followed by the Thai capital Bangkok in second place, with Italy's Rome and Florence in third and fourth places respectively. The northern Thai city of Chiang Mai made its first appearance in the top 10, placing fifth.

New York ranked sixth, followed by Istanbul in Turkey, Cape Town in South Africa, Oaxaca in Mexico and San Francisco.

Well, it was at one time - so you'd be partially correct.

Relax, he made a mistake. I am sure you cannot name the capital of every single country on the face of the Earth.

There is no way Sydney is the best city. Melbourne wins it hands down.

- Better quality roads. Sydneys concrete roads are terrible. Even their freeways are mostly 'patch' jobs.

- Better mobile phone coverage. In Sydney I noticed it dropped out a lot during travel. It never drops out in Melbourne.

- Better water quality. Water in Melbourne is far more drinkable than Sydney.

- Less built up. Over population in Sydney causes rediculous traffic.

- Better restraunts. Melbourne is known for its great food.

- Better beaches and bays.

- Less polution.

Thats just a few that I can come up with.

Things I like about Sydney though are:

- A lot warmer than Melbourne.

- Sydney airport is awesomely huge.

- A lot of mega retail outlets.

- Krispy Kreams (when are we going to get these in Melbourne!!) :)

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Australia's biggest city, Sydney, has again been named the world's best city by readers of the U.S. magazine Travel and Leisure.

I'll bet that the people who voted would change their mind if they'd ever been to Sydney.

I'm from Newcastle which is a 1.5 hour drive north of Sydney, and I hate going to the place. It does have some nice landmarks, and a couple of attractions, but overall I'd never want to live there, nor would I like to spend an extended amount of time there.

- You'd get boerd with the Harbour Bridge and the Opera house after a couple of hours, (add 4 hours if you do the Harbour Bridge Climb).

- Bondi Beach is overrated, we have several beaches here in Newcastle that beat Bondi hands down.

- You might get a full day's entertainment out of Darling Harbour, half a day at the aquarium, then the rest at the shops and Casino.

- The Zoo is alright for half a day, same with the Museum, Power House Museum and art galleries, not everybody is into those kind of things though.

I think the problem is that everything is in the CBD, so after you spend 3 or 4 days there you really would be boerd. I think I actually heard that tourists spend less time in Sydney then many other cities in Au.

The roads are also a complete nightmare, the city is un-planned, so the road structure makes as much sense, streets go everywhere. I got lost in Sydney when I was working there once, all I wanted to do was go for a quick drive, but I ended up battling the roads for over 2 hours.

I haven't been to any international cities (although in August I'm going to London, all over Italy and Kuala Lumpur :D), but at the moment I can't comment on international cities. Compared to other Australian cities, Melbourne is an excellent city, it definetly beats Sydney IMO, so does Brisbane.

I don't hate Sydney, it is a great place to visit short term, but I wouldn't ever consider living there or spending more then a week there if I could get away with it.

I've only been down to Sydney once, in the Liverpool area. My late uncle lived there with his girlfriend so my family and I went down to visit them on our way to Canberra to see another related family (another uncle and his wife and their 3 girls) who is in the UK at the moment on holidays.

Canberra looks dry and hot but otherwise good visiting places. On our way back home to Mt Morgan, QLD, We went over the famous bridge (note: this is the only ever time I went over that bridge). I could see the opera house and the city and I can tell you the city looks so busy, we almost had an car accident.

Take it easy there, pal. Obviously, I had no idea that was the capital of Australia, so if I offended you, I apologize. I never heard of Canberra anyway, so I figured Sydney was the capital due to its popularity in everything including the Olympics.

I live in Sydney and its too overated. It's only good as an tourist attraction...anything else it's pretty much a less populated, less technologically advanced developed city.

Melbourne people should just take it easy, they've been arguing whether which city is better for like a century now. Just live with it.

Also, what people don't realise is that Sydney is often in draughts. We're currently in the worst draught for like 100 something years. That's a bloody long time. If it gets any worse, we might end up drinking our own urine :p
