LEFTERIZ
Hello I'm going to upgrade my system and i have two questions mobos: Gigabyte 8IE (i845e) OR Asus P4S533 (SiS645DX) and why? which is better? and the second one: which P4 is the most overclockable? If i get an 1.8 in which frequency can i overclock it without changing any cooling.
Initial 2k2
Go with the Asus.. It has more options with Overclocking, etc.. GB is good, but not THE best.. Get a 1.6a, if your lucky, you can get it to 2.5 ghz with no extra cooling and no extra voltage needed.. The 1.6a is said to be "underclocked" by Intel.. Meaning the cheapest, and the most efficient
username
i would go with a 1.8ghz becasue of the 18x multipler, up the FSB to 133 and its an easy 2.4ghz vs the 1.6ghz at 16x133=2.13ghz. See if the extra price of the 18x is worth it, I am not current on P4 prices, nice OC either way though. Go with the Asus (not an Asus fan myself) but the SIS chip on it OCs well. v0rt3x
The P4S533 is yeilding many high o/cs (atleast 2.4 GHz for most) with the 1.6A. It's also a good board for bandwith, because at 150 FSB, using the 4/6 divider you can have your memory running at DDR450 (providing your memory can handle those speeds). So i'd definitely recommend it. For the proc, I'd recommend the 1.6A or 1.8A, anything higher won't yield as great a % of an o/c. The 2.26B is said to be able to reach speeds as high as 3 GHz on air cooling, but DDR boards with the SiS 645DX chipset aren't good candidates for o/cs over 150-160 FSB because after that your PCI/AGP bus speeds go way out of spec. If you want to go for a higher o/c get a i850 or i845 board with lockable PCI/AGP bus.
