Tenebrious_Star
Dell, Horrible Customer support and cases that crack over time after your hinges lock up and the stress gets to it. Soon they will have a magnesium alloy casing though...like other companies already do. Ive JUST bought my notebook, A toshiba 5100-046 (canadian model), but all the research I did was for top of the line notebooks (cost me 4250 canadian). Only insight I can give you is to try Sony, Gateway, or Toshiba...they seem to match quality with price the best...also www.zdnet.com has a section on notebooks that they keep up to date which can be usefull...DONT try for IBM...their notebooks are 1000 dollars above other companies notebooks with similar stats. EDIT: My last notebook was an Acer with a PIII 700, 256 mb ram, and 8 mb ati card. The system itself was good but it soon fell apart as it shares the same affliction as dell notebooks currently do (Theres not a scratch or dent on it, but it just slowly got harder and harder to open and cracks began to appear to the point where the notebook fell apart and left me kicking myself for not getting the 3 year warranty, since they would have replaced it. Ive read similar stories from dell notebook users.)
Nude Rooster
Here I go again, doing something I promised myself I would never do. Im recomending a Compaq. good price, good performance, reliable, great service. I bought one for my fiance, hard drive died after about 5 months, called and complained, had one the next day. Well other than that, they are reliable. Dell's are way overpriced for what you get, tho they do have the nicest keyboard. If you win the lottery between now and your buy-date, get a Toshiba Tecra. amoeba
I would go with an iBook/TiBook, but if you are looking PC, you want a Dell.
YahoKa
iBooks are good, but my brother had a bad experience with that crap. He bought one, and one year and a few days later it broke (his waranty was for 1 year exactly.) He wrote to apple and they basically told him to **** himself. wired57
so the sony systems are worth it? how do the hp systems rank? I'm getting a notebook next month and I would like to get a decent system myself where it will last for 5+ years if needed

jayfer1
I gotta agree with sailgreg. I got an IBM T23 Thinkpad off of EBay that was still in the box for cheap and it works like a champ;)
Stinger12348
If you want name brand laptop go with a dell. Everyone I know has had great experiences with them, don't know about everyone else though. But if you want a good one but don't care about name brand goto http://www.discountlaptops.com and looks around. They have good laptops for pretty cheap. Warranty is pretty good too. But that's just my two cents.
jayfer1
Other than EBay, you might find a good laptop for a good price at http://www.ubid.com I know a couple of people that were pleased with their purchase.
