Initial 2k2
Okay, this is my first system I built.. heres the steps I took.. Took everything outtve box... Place AMD Duron 1.2 ghz on the socket, closed it up.. Put about 40-50 pounds of pressure on the HSF (I guess this is normal?) Placed my Kingston 256 DDR ram in the mobo.. Put mobo in the case.. Put Radeon 8500 in there ( no onboard ) hooked it up with my power supply did all the front panel connectors installed hard drive installed cd drive I did NOT install a FLOPPY drive yet Reminder, this is my first built system.. I go to boot it up for the first time nervously shaking, I get no screen ( I guess this is post? ) its just all black, and then I get like 5 or 6 beeps.. :*( My friend said it was my ram, BUT this morning i tried again! I actually got post screen.. Floppy Drive Error F11 To resume, Setup (del), and like 2 other options.. but, when I tried to get into BIOS (setup), my system locked up... Then when I tried booting it up again, I got that beeping sound again! Also, on post, it detected my 1.2 ghz Duron Processor So heres the stuff that DOES work.. My optical mouse ( the mobo gives power to it ) My keyboard (the mobo shows the lightup keys work *capslock numlock*) CDRom drive which is correct Its detected my hard drive which is correct It shows that theres no Floppy drive which is correct The Video card MUST work, because I actually GOT a screen.. the stuff im IFFY about.. The RAM (but why?) The CPU / HSF placement (even tho Im PRETTY sure I got it down in there good ) Another thing.. When I put the Heatsink fan on there, I pulled off this wax tape stuff, but there was some OTHER tape on there, which I dont think Im suspose to take off.. correct? PLEASE HELP! *panicing*
Crazy_Seb
50 pounds of pressure ON THE HSF?  You probably have crushed your CPU core, and now the CPU is dead. :dead: edit: there was a protective pad on the bottom of the HSF right? When ya pulled that off, there was ANOTHER layer under it? If ya left that second layer where it was, its cool. :alien:
Initial 2k2
Well, no.. cause it detected the CPU.. it wouldnt boot up if the core were crushed.. all i know it was kinda hard to place on there hehe
Tokhra
Check your motherboard manual, the number of beeps you hear usually tells you where the problem is... IE 5 beeps for bad memory... 2 beeps for bad GFX.. stuff like that. Oh and it would boot up if the core was crushed just woudlnt be very stable. I know someone who chippe the edge off his core... still worked but wasnt very stable.
Crazy_Seb
i'm pretty sure that when you put 50 pounds of pressure on a AMD CPU, the core is crushed. :dead:
Initial 2k2
Hmm, I kinda looked for that.. No technical support section or stuff I can really find in it.. Its an MSI 745 Ultra

I then read the HSF Stock installation that comes with Duron processor.. I took off the wax tape part, left the other tape on there, as it susposely says.. I then put the HSF on the processor very smoothly, aligning it with the socket.. I clipped the front part first *snap*, no problemo I then had to get screw driver, and pile the other clip in the socket, just like it said in installaiton guide.. So did i follow this wrong somehow? Kurt
Maybe you bought wrong type of RAM. Try replace another RAM which is very good brand, not like generic RAM. It happened to me before. And now it worked. Kurt

Tokhra
CPU installation sounds fine then, id pretty much say it was your RAM... either the wrong type or a faulty batch.. it happens sometimes.

Just a question here.. faulty / bad ram would be meaning, it really doesnt work at all, meaning the same as having no ram in there -- but that would cause no post, yet I had one post screen.. is that your definition of bad/faulty? Steven P. Administrators Posted June 27, 2002 Administrators Share Posted June 27, 2002 Yeah it looks like Ram issue.. do you have older Ram you can test it with? when this happens to me I do the old deduction.. first disconnect harddisks, cdrom etc until you cant go any further. Kurt
Yes, if it's defected then you get BLANK on your monitor. All you hear is beep. Thats about it. Kurt
Tokhra
Faulty could be anything... .not working at all.. or intermittent... have you checked that no dust got into the contacts when u installed the RAM.. have you tried re-seating the RAM again... maybe try it in a different slot.... JuGGalo
in my opinion you may have not got the vid card seated right most bios will give one beep followed buy numerous short beeps and the screen dont turn on the card only need to be out a little for this to happen. or the vid card maybe fualty otherwise i would say ram if you killed the cpu the pc wouldnt boot at all no beeps no nothing have to made sure ya ram is in the right slot some mobos need one ram stick placed in dimm 3 not dimm 1 and if ya have the nforce chipset you may need a second stick of ram as it uses duel bus dimm 1 is for the cpu dimm 2/3 is for the pc look at ya vid card and ram and in the bios you have a setting to disable the floppy drive seek that saves on that error

Steven P. Administrators Posted June 27, 2002 Administrators Share Posted June 27, 2002 Check if your motherboard BIOS supports 1200MHz Durons.. it may post correctly (because most are programmed to post future CPU's) but might need a BIOS update to correct a problem.
