How can I increase CPU speed!?

Recommended Posts

I have a 200MHZ MMX CPU, and was wondering how I can increase its speed "software wise" as in not haveing to open the case and start flipin switches on the motherboard and stuff like that.

My motherboard can take 256RAM, so I guess its not that crappy.

So can it be done!?

Upgrade.

A 200MHZ isn't worth overclocking or even trying to speed up.

Short answer, no.

Long answer, there used to be a project in the works called SoftFSB by some programmers attempting to allow the user to up the FSB (Front Side Bus) and potentially over-clock the CPU. Don't know if it worked. Project has been discontinued anyway.

I'm assuming this is a socket-7 mboard, so you *might* be able to maybe stick a K6-2 in there, maybe. Other than that, you're stuck until you get a new mboard and proc.

If it is running a P200, the short answer is no.

Look into picking up a cheap Celeron or P4 chip/board combo and you'll be back happy on the net in no time. :)

You're going to want to get a new motherboard, new ram, and a new cpu. Your current motherboard will most likely be unable to support the newer processors (i'm assuming your current processor is a pentium pro or pentium II), plus 256MB of RAM isn't that good these days.

i think people are trying to tell you it's not worth it. you'll be paying 30-40 bucks for a 233 MHz chip and is most likely out of warranty (that's if you've got a socket 7, which i'm assuming you do, and i think a 233 is as high as they go for a socket 7)...

...when right now duron 1GHz chips are going for 37 bucks...that's 5 times faster that your processor now, and that's just taking into account CPU speed. for a little over $100 you can get a new motherboard and processor. :D
