mimeryme
hi, a friend of mine just recently upgraded his pc from a compaq to an hp with better specs, but he says the system seems more sluggish. compaq: 700MHz AMD Duron Compaq/nVidia Vanta LT 128MB SDRAM (PC133) Windows Me WordPerfect 8, then 9 hp: 1.6GHz Pentium 4 256MB SDRAM (PC133) Windows XP Home WordPerfect 9 I'm not sure about his HP's vidcard. I'll post it when I find out. WordPerfect is the prog he usually multitasks with. Multiple documents and all. Can it be that noticably sluggish compared to his old PC? I disabled the fancy graphics effects in his XP installation and nothing that wasn't running before in his compaq is running in his hp. The following things are running still: VirusScan 5.21 Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. I realize that P4 coupled with SDRAM is slow, but I wouldn't expect it to be that way when compared to the AMD Duron. I thought the HD might be slower... say a 7200RPM in the compaq and a 5400RPM drive in the hp. He doesn't know the specs of his hd though. Is there a prog that can measure the hd speed without opening up the hd? Or is there an easier way?
Chris123NT
Check what he has running at startup and get rid of it all :p Seriously HP is known to stuff alot of **** software on their comps that just sit there and eat ram all day :p
mimeryme
I believe, most of the startup programs were taken off. Anyway, I've got some more things for him to check. You see, he works with ZIPdisks often, and the new system does not have space for internal drive, so he uses USB drive. That might be the problem. Oh and, I forgot to tell him to scandisk-defrag. The vidcard is a RIVA TNT 64 (HP) btw. I'll post again, if nothing's resolved. Thanks.
