Difference between FireFox and Mozilla?

Recommended Posts

FireFox and Mozilla are both very alike. FireFoz is faster. Mozilla is more feature rich.

Why can't they all be compiled together to make one awesome program? Why 2 seperate ones?

Web browser discussion/Mozilla Gecko would be a better place to put this?

They use the same rendering engine (Gecko). Firefox is a lightweight version of Mozilla. You've just summarised the differences in saying that one is faster/minimalist - browsing only. Whereas the Mozilla SUITE consists of many more 'feature rich' applications.

My 2c. Mozilla.org has more details on each project.

The biggest difference is that Firefox is a VERY slimed down version of the Mozilla Suite, they basically took the Netscape code incorporated it into Mozilla with their own tweaks and add-ons, then took that mozilla code and slimed it down into a less-bulky browser.

EDIT: Thanks john

The Mozilla suite reached a point where it became TOO bloated and lacked focus. Firefox and Thunderbird were, originally, just small side projects that, over time, blossomed into something much bigger. Realizing people were more interested in a component based system and not an "all in one" deal, the Mozilla Foundation threw their weight behind the project and brought it to the fore front.

i remember in the past mozilla had like 4 different browsers for different purposes... they had one for faxster browsing, one for email integration, one for extra utilities, this was rihgt when firefox came out

mozilla seriously doesnt have tabbed browsing!? WTF!

I thought it did. I remember using it with tabs. Or maybe that was Netscape.

If Netscape has tabs, I expect Mozilla Suite does.

EDIT: Just check it does have tabbed browsing

The Mozilla Suite is no longer maintained by the Mozilla Foundation... their focus is on Firefox and Thunderbird.

The project was given to an independent group known as the SeaMonkey Council so they could continue working on it.. thus the Mozilla Suite's new name 'SeaMonkey' (which was the suite's internal name)

Basically, ever since Mozilla milestones were first created back in 1998, from Netscape's released source code, Mozilla has always been an app-suite, meaning there was a browser, a mail client, and composer, just like Netscape 4 had. That has not much since then. However, users started to want just a browser, or just mail. So the stand-alone products were created, Firefox and Thunderbird.

I use Mozilla Suite(SeaMonkey) as my main browser, and I find it not at all "bloated," as some may call it. Infact I switched from Firefox to the suite as I wanted everything(browser, mail) in one package.

And, yes, Mozilla does have tabs. :)
