0 Dazzla Veteran Posted June 28, 2002 Veteran Share Posted June 28, 2002 Moved to software discussion I don't think this is any different from transferring a music CD to a hard drive. I'm starting to archive all my legally bought DVD's onto my iMac so they can be easily accessed. Nothing wrong in that is there? I've got about 50 DVD's I've purchased and it's a pain at the moment because my TV and DVD player aren't in my room so if I want to watch a DVD I can now just play the movie on my iMac. All with OS X style, 2 clicks from a DVD to a .mov file ease of use :cheeky:

That was encoded at 900kbps. I'm not intending on burning them to CD so the 1gb limit is cool. I'm also going to limit it to my best DVD's like crouching tiger, fight club, etc etc. The godfather can stay on DVD as well, the trilogy will take like 10gb alone! Plus, 10-15 DVD's should last me until my room is finished being decorated and I can move everything back in :D
0 jessejlt
Actually this does violate the rules: "No Warez (links) & Cracks: help. requests or posts that discuss circumvention" This conversation is about how to circumvent DVD Copyright protection (CSS). 0 samo123_uk
It is only breaking the rules if you are copying the dvd and then lending it out or selling it for cash. The software compainies allow us to make 1 backup copy of the software on and media. It's just the same with DVD's. It's OK as long as you don't give it away and only keep it on your computer for YOUR USE. Any way there are MOD's talking on this thread, so if you've got a brain you should be able to work out that it's OK to talk about it.

Actually not all of us are from US, so the Digital Millennium Copyright Act could go directly to the hell for what we, non US citizens, can concern. A law is valid only in the country where it was ruled. Plus, in many other countries backuping a owned media is perfectly legit, more, it's a right. 0 MLapointe
They stated to me on the phone that I can do the following. Using a VCR recorder (GoVideo ect...) I can archive my video tape collection for "PERSONAL USE ONLY"!!!! Using a CD recorder (computer or home audio system) I can archive my CD collection for "PERSONAL USE ONLY"!!!!! Using my DVD recorder (computer or 1000.00 home DVD recorder like the Philips DVD recorder) I can archive my DVD collection for "PERSONAL USE ONLY"!!!!! This was all said from Columbia. 1. Columbia Records for my CD's 2. Columbia/TriStar for VHS and DVD's They said it is not piracy if I use it for "PERSONAL USE ONLY"! They also said I can't sell or give out copy's of their products whether via Person to Person or Internet. nuff said. So by what the original poster says you have to take his word that he's archiving for his personal use which is what he said he was doing and therefore not committing an act of piracy. By what this boards rules are it states do not post anything relating to cracks or warez (aka. piracy). This poster is asking how to archive his DVD's for personal use (aka personal backup via VHS, CD or in this case DVD) which is not braking the rules of this forum. If any of you don't agree with me please leave your computer and quit thinking and acting like you know everything there is to know about everything and call Columbia/TriStar of someday and find out you are wrong for (in your case) 'ONCE' in your whole life. 0 MLapointe
For the people who hate to look at bad engish (like me) I'm sorry for the bad spelling and the like. It's just I use my computer for fun and entertainment and I don't take English too seriously on the web because I consider the web a place to express my personality (bad English, Math and so forth). I hated school for a long time. It's just the little thing of having to go to school for 12 years(elementry, middle and high school) plus 4 years of College plus another two years of Graduate school and quite frankly I'm sick and tired of shool and thus don't want to apply anything relating to school subjects on these forums and anywhere else on the web for that part for one reason only. I'm not being graded here and I don't plan on being graded here. How many of you here feel the same way as me. ie. sick and tired of school and don't want to blend the web in any way with school.
