AndyD
im not really interested in implementing raid but i do need the extra ide controllers. thing is that right now i have a matrox controller card which i use for the extra drives i have. im currently checking out what board im gonna get when the new kt400 boards come out and ive narrowed it down to gigabyte and asus. thing is that asus does not have raid on the board but it does have serial ata unlike the gigabyte. control same performance as on board? better? worse? amoeba
From everything I have seen, PCI-based RAID controllers are a lot faster and more reliable than onboard. Remember, one of the main points behind RAID is reliability. That means you want onboard nothing so you can easily replace it when it fries. Go with a PCI RAID controller...even PCI IDE controllers are faster (much faster in what I have seen) than onboard.

I agree, the ones that they put on the motherboard are the very bare essential chipsets. The Promise Raid Controller you will find on most boards is the lowest line they make. You can get better ones than that for about a hundred bucks. Promise FastTrak TX2's i think and TX4's. And you can spend quit a bit more. I would advise a PCI based card.
