.will
The past couple weeks, my Firefox has been progressively worse. First, it started bringing up the Find prompt (Ctrl + F) every time I'd hit the ' key when typing on Neowin posts. This is incredibly annoying, as I what I'd type after ' would be in the find box. So I'd have to close out of the Find prompt and retype what I missed. And using contractions quite frequently, this was a big issue. However, this happened (seemingly) randomly (for instance of running Firefox - I.E. in one session of running FF, the ' key would bring up Find, but next time I opened FF, it would not). Next, Ctrl + F stopped bringing up the Find prompt. Again this was seemingly random. However it hasn't been a problem in the past couple of days. However, this morning was the worst. I opened up Firefox to find ALL MY BOOKMARKS ARE GONE!! I tried opening up FF through the start menu via both Firefox and Firefox (Safe Mode). Both instances resulted in NO BOOKMARKS, not even the default FF ones. Also, the tab bar was constantly changing height by about 2-5 pixels very rapidly, so it looked with all the text on the page was shaking! What is going on? I love Firefox and I have tried all other (major) alternatives (Avant Browser, Opera, and Maxthon) and they don't even come close to FF in my opinion (don't start this into a flame war - just don't). If someone could shed some light on this issue, it would be wonderful! Thanks ;) .will

Neyht Member Posted July 20, 2005 Member Share Posted July 20, 2005 (edited) Try to find your bookmarks.html file. It should be in a folder under c:\documents and settings\<username>\application data<hidden folder>\mozilla\... Do a search for it. the find bar hotkey is (') which makes no sense. [edit: seems I was wrong]. I had the same thing happen to me starting around version 1.04 or 1.05 I'm not sure. Menge
hmm you can try: C:\Documents and Settings\USER_NAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\PROFILE_NAME\bookmarks.bak look around. yo ushould only have one folder for profile... but if you have more, you can look there might be several "bookmark" files in a profile, they're just backup copies that firefox does. .will
Well my bookmarks are done for. I checked the "bookmarks.html" "bookmarks.bak" "bookmarks.html.sbsd.bak" and they all contained: <!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1> <!-- This is an automatically generated file. It will be read and overwritten. DO NOT EDIT! --> <META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" CONTENT="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> <TITLE>Bookmarks</TITLE> <H1>Bookmarks</H1> <DL><p> <DT><H3 ADD_DATE="1121791042" PERSONAL_TOOLBAR_FOLDER="true" ID="rdf:#$q.pPj1">Bookmarks Toolbar Folder</H3> <DL><p> </DL><p> </DL><p> There goes a couple months of bookmarks. As much as I LOVE Firefox, this really makes me think about switching. Although I can back up my bookmarks (thanks to Amsterdam ;) - but a little late I must add :pinch:. I don't want to work with a browser that could wipe my settings and be this screwy. All other programs at the moment are working fine. For now, I'm going to uninstall then install FF 1.0.6 :/... AHHH GODDAMN!! This jittering of the whole page (the height of the bookmark toolbar fluctuating rapidly, forcing the whole entire page to jump up and down) is driving me insane!! ev0|
The exact same thing happened to me, the best bet is to make sure you regularly backup the bookmarks. It was something weird with 1.0.5 I guess. I'm using firefox again, but i will seriously take a look at IE 7 Beta 1 if they've improved it alot.
