hornett
Scientists are questioning the safety of a Star Wars-style riot control ray gun due to be deployed in Iraq next year. The Active Denial System weapon, classified as "less lethal" by the Pentagon, fires a 95GHz microwave beam at rioters to cause heating and intolerable pain in less than five seconds. Source Photos  From the photographs, it looks to me like it transmits a large beam - let's hope nobody gets trapped in front of it eh? madnuke
Looks poweful I am sure the opertors would have to wear some sort of suit that radar technicians where so they dont get cooked.
dreamz Veteran Posted July 21, 2005 Veteran Share Posted July 21, 2005 great. so people will need to remove all their coins and glasses so they don't get seriously injured while getting shot with a microwave beam? i can see why the scientists are questioning its safety. hornett
^^ Yea, what about the long term health risk from these kind of things too? Do things like this increase the chance of getting cancer/having miscarriages/getting tumors etc? All in all, it seems like a no-no to me!
MonkeyClaw Veteran Posted July 21, 2005 Veteran Share Posted July 21, 2005 doesnt matter, they are "terrorists" so why should they care if they get cancer

revvo
This is the most idiotic, careless and wreckless thing I have ever seen being developed from the U.S. Case 1: What about people with pacemakers? What if they are in the riot? Suddenly a non-lethal weapon becomes lethal. Case 2: In testing, they have asked the people (who were part of the experiment) to remove all contact lenses and glasses. Is this feasible in reality? Um, not Likely?. Find a riot and ask the people to nicely remove their glasses, contacts, neckless, spoons and any other metals before getting fried for 5 seconds. Case 3: This thing doesn't give you the feeling that you are getting burned. You are getting burned. It's microwaves. As non-lethal as it may be (not considering the previous cases), this thing surely damages. Riots don't happen in the middle of the desert. They are in urban cities where you have houses, buildings, many civilians and innocent children roaming around. Microwaves (afaik) increases the chances of getting cancer/tumors for the people who would be living in the neighborhood that aren't as peaceful as they want it to be and it surely ain't their fault that they are living there. Case 4: Why is this just for riots in Iraq? Why not for all riots? You're telling me USA or any other country for that matter is anything close to paradise? People roam around freely in the streets without being afraid of gangs or dangerous groups of people? If any place on earth deserves this more than Iraq, it's the Israeli/Palestine area where conflicts goes on since the very beginning but hey, right now all the focus is on Iraq so why not use Iraq as a testlab. Case 5: Stun guns didn't work too well. People in riots fight back even when some are getting stunned. A group of ****ed off people will not go all of a sudden "omg.. look, he's been stunned. let's all stop!" I could go on and on but I think I covered most issues that people have been discussing about. This riot control ray is dumb.
sdb815
How about we not create the conditions that make people want to riot in the first place? Oh wait, this is Iraq we are talking about. We don't need to worry, Iraq is just fine, really it is. I'm serious. :pinch:
turkishdelight
Only in America  That has to be the worst riot control mechanism I've ever seen.
