My first of many Longhorn mockups to come; not yet completed, but armed with a couple changes I think MS would be proud of. :D

what imrpovements are there really? you mean you changed the ugliest icons that won't be there anyway? I assure you Longhorn final will look better than this.

What I'm working on right now is bringing back the 4074 title bar. I still like the 5408+ back/forward buttons... but they look much to close to XP for my liking; Longhorn is supposed to mean changes. Also... it isn't quite finished yet. When I say 'a couple changes' I mean the old title bar with new icons, and search feild on the menu bar. I'll come-up with more, beleive me.

Everybody will need new underwear, soon enough... :ninja:

Look VERY closely at the top right corner of the setup window, and the bottom left corner of the music window. Not just in these areas (although these are the most visible) anything 3D cathces the red glow of the close button. What would be really cool, is if in Longhorn could render artificial light sources, AS IF the whole OS was 3D. What I'm saying... is that you could make a button in an application render a glow, or light source, so that anything '3D' in any windows, icons, or text would 'catch' the light. Another cool idea: when you move the 'glass' window... the reflections move across the glass, giving the illusion of actual reflection... not just gradients put in place.

the ability to definte light sources was part of the skin schema in the 4000 series, and I expect that to be put back into place and eventually be exposed. And the reflections, like you said would be cool, although I envision it a little different: moving the window around alters the amount of refraction for background windows, and makes them "bend" behind the moving window. I'm not sure I'm explaining that well, but if you can imagine it, you'll realize how awesome that would be. This might actually be planned for Longhorn as well, I need to rewatch the demo during the keynote and see if it actually has varying degrees of referaction on different parts of the window.

Come to think of it, the refraction with your reflections would be absolutely stunning (not to mention extremely realistic), I hope both make it into Aero :)

Edit: came up with an example of where you would see this kind of refraction: imagine holding a magnifying glass over a page of text. As you move the magnifying glass, the text on the edges gets warped as the lens moves over it moves to the center of the lens.

Look, it's got nothing to do with you or your skills it's just pretty rude to jump in when someone else is showcasing a concept and then post your own pic from a long time ago. It's also confusing for the readers of the thread, because they look at the images first.

Trojan, that's gorgeous!

Better e-mail that to Microsoft!

I'm serious. Just for kicks, see if you can submit it through the proper channels.

No i didn't. I was wrong, sorry.

But your design is still **** poor, sorry for that too. my opinion.

Also - My Microsoft Longhorn Design is a really bad title for a thread where you're going to be asking others to to post their designs too. Trojan, yours is so much better than anyone elses that i think you deserve to be in a class by yourself anyway.

Question for everyone.....

Has Microsoft ever explained the thoughts/ideas behind the glass effect around the windows?

586250225[/snapback]

I am sure they would/could give you some usability study conducted by someone....I find about as much value in one of those as I do gartner studies...

I do like the look, but not sure it is all that useful

I don't get why the close, minimise, restore buttons are 1/2 size...

What is the point of having a blank space under it? It just makes it harder to click.

I beleive this is what you were talking about. I didn't have time to blur... as I did a whipup job frame by frame in Photoshop, but you'll notice the light source is somewhere up at the top, and the reflection is always towards that source. I also added your fisheye effect.
