I was an avid Maxthon user until today, when I discovered the awesome Netscape 8 browser. It's like Opera, since it has a customizable built-in mail client (mine updates my GMail). But the best part of the browser is the ability to switch between the IE engine and the Gecko (Firefox) engine. By default, the FF engine is used for general browsing, and the IE engine is used with your "trusted sites," but you can easily edit it. Anyway, it's now my one and only browser (sans Internet Explorer). So... does anyone actually use Netscape, other than me? It's supposed to be pretty ancient nowadays...

As far as I know, they do not make a Mac version.  So, no, I don't use Netscape.

Oh... I didn't know that. Well, I guess that would explain why its popularity is far down.

The only reason I can see people using Netscape 8 is for the render engine switch. (Which I think is really cool)

I'll stick with Firefox, it has more excitement with nightly versions.

I remember using Netscape a few years back, maybe it was 6. At the time lol, I was a total noob and didn't knew that there were other borwsers than IE, so I was like OHHH!! wow this is amazing. And used it for a year or so. those days ... :pinch:

It's (was) a good browser, but it had lots of extra features which I don't need, and nowadays I use Firefox ... never tried Netscape since then, don't know why .... maybe I don't need more than 2 browsers.

hey i used netscape 8 awhile abck when it was new beta or just out/leaked whatever..

with the green interface/etc

It was OK, i mean, it was nice getting away from IE, etc (ididnt like firefox at the time :p) but yea..

Browsers are funny. i mean people haev their favourites but i personally erally dont

Is it just me or do otehr ppl too have almost every browser installed ? :s

I have installed from a lnog time and use all the browsers.

Opera 8

Firefox

IE

Netscape

and few others (kmelon,etc)

Thing is i use all of them, when ni a hurry, click the quick IE quicklaunch icon, when know im going to browse aot use opera for fast tabs/etc

when goign to wanna go to a unknown place ill use firefox to be safe.

They all have their differences and such.

At the end it comes down to trying all of them, because each one has something different to offer, and then using the noe u love the most

Personally i think i use Opera a lot.

Its fast as hell, wrks just like you want it to, never crashes.. nice tabs.

There is also a version of Maxthon which can switch between IE`s engine and the Gecko engine... YOu can download it from the official Maxthon home page.. ;)

I have tried netscape 8 and to be honest, I didnt really like it. It is basically firefox, but with a new theme and heaps of add-ons that make it go slow. I like the idea of being able to choose what browser u want to use to view this page, but no. I do not use it. Firefox is way better...AND FASTER!

I gave up on Netscape since 6.1, when I transferred over to Mozilla and almost a year ago, to Firefox. AOL's gotta learn that Netscape's days are over and let Firefox be the one to hassle IE.

Well, my experience with major browsers goes something like this, if I remember:

1. IE4*

2. IE5.5

3. Netscape Communicator 4.7*

4. Netscape 6*

5. Mozilla 1.x*

6. Opera 7

7. IE6

8. Mozilla Firebird

9. Mozilla Firefox

10. Netscape 7

11. Netscape 8

12. Opera 8

13. Deer Park Alpha 1 + 2

I used NS8 briefly (in beta) and didn't like it, mostly because of some bugs and the garish interface.

Where is the version of Maxthon you speak of? I only find two versions... Combo and Lite.

Theres no mac version. I used to use firefox on mac, but recently moved back to safari 2.0 because its interface is much faster. New windows load faster, Scrolling is better, it doesnt lag when viewing flash or animated GIFs (which used to be a problem), and its now fully compatible with gmail ( i used to have serious problems).

Also, default page elements (buttons, scrollbars, drop-down boxes etc) are extremely ugly in firefox (dont use aqua theme). I suspect a netscape browser on mac would be just as bad.

I think it was on their forums... I`m gonna check it out now...

Here it is... As far as I can see, the normaln version of Maxthon is enough, you just need to download the gecko engine ( the download link is on the forums )

here is the link to the thread on their forums
