riven_uk
Ok I'll try to explain this the best i can. Last Wednesday I came home from work and decided to wake my pc up from "Sleep Mode" - but nothing happens - it doesn't wake up .... so I have to use the trusty power button.... It switches off I leave it for about 30 seconds - i turn it back on - the hard drives start up , it checks the cd drives and the a: drive - and that's it - the "busy" indicator is constantly green (usually it flickers as it processes etc) and my monitor appears to still be in "sleep mode"... I turn off my pc 3 more times same thing happens - then suddenly my pc acts normal - it booted up until the "Loading XP Pro screen" and then it stopped - i.e. screen went blank - tried the "Last known good config" but that froze repetedly... I had spent hours trying to find out what was wrong - so i had no choice but to reformat - so i went back to Windows 2000. *phew* i thought - no more stupid Sleep Mode for me... HOWEVER - something similar happened - this time i was playing an mp3 and ripping a cd - then suddenly my speakers went crazy and everything froze... had to use the power button - and again it was like dead at boot - but then fine and thankfuly it booted in to windows 2000 ok. Anyone know what it could be? Or how to prevent it? I have a feeling it's eithier my Geforce 2 card or Memory screwing up? Please help.

mimeryme
it's funny, you say wednesday. but you're in the UK. don't know about your weather. a similar thing happened to me, but i figure it was the weather. a very scorching day and stupidly i left the pc on. apparently the hsf setup got disturbed due to the heat and my hsf needed a reinstall. btw, i have an athlonXP2100. too bad to reinstall the hsf, i had to take everything apart and after a hard day at work, i spent a good 2-3 hours to figure it out, but took abou 30mins to do the reinstall. sigh. well, at least it worked for me. so if you've got hot weather, amd cpu, and the pc still starts, u should try doing this. else, reconsider first. But it's been average here today - which is when the second event occured. Would you advise I look at the heat sink fan - that's what you mean by HSF right? Because my pc is working ok atm - the event only happens after some sort of crash. mmm. Thanks for your help :)
mimeryme
i believe this is what happened to my machine: my heatsink is large and the hot weather and hence the extreme temp build up in my pc disturbed the thermal paste contact. if you're pc is running fine, you shouldn't need to reinstall the hsf. fine = no unusual crashes. unless you've recently installed something that ruined your XP install, your machine should be fine. i wouldn't want you to work unneccesarily. :) if you'd like, you could also try reseating the memory and any cards (pci/agp) you have. heat loosens the contact a bit sometimes. reseating does wonders, but only if nothing is really broken. again, if it's fine, you should have nothing to worry about. still, i myself am taking the precaution of not leaving the pc on in hot weather. riven_uk
OK cool - i might have a look at reseating my memory - now I think about it - I've had a similar experience with one of my old PC's and not seating the memory correctly - i.e. "dead on boot" kinda thing ... Thanks for your help - VERY appreciated :)
