Nope.  I ran the same programs in XP and Vista and Vista took the cake.  Everything is very smooth.  CPU very low, and also, I don't know if it because it's a beta but very few things appear to be running in the background.  The programs actually fit without having to scroll.  :)

:o i might have to keep beta 1 aroud as my main os if this is the case! My xp is somewhat sluggish...

seems as though all the normal things worrk during setup, like shift + f10 will give a command prompt, then taskmgr can get you the task manager, but a little way into the install, I thought I would try openig the control panel, typed in control, and it started the gui while I was still in setup (I mean the start menu) the loading bar was still in the background.

I'm testing Vista right now in games like Doom 3 and UT2004. I've been tweaking Vista for 3 hours now and it's working even faster than XP.

I disabled every graphical effect, removed the background and disabled as much services as possible.

I also installed the beta on my slow system:

AMD Duron 905MHz

Infineon 128 MB SDRAM 133MHz

XFX Geforce FX5600 128MB overclocked

Everything is working perfectly fine on this old system.

It looks like DirectX games (UT2004) are using less resources than on XP.

They will usally let you in for a few beta, nothing big like msn messenger or things like that then later if you report bugs and are dedicated to them then you get some big beta test to do!!, hope this helps you understand better

You MAY, and I use caps for a reason, but may be experiencing the same issue I was. I actually found myself to be "Pending" yet I was able to download IE7 and Vista.

Check my post on PRO about how to check. After I went into the downloads area, my status changed from Pending to Approved. So either MS just happened to Approve me at that very second, or me visiting the downloads page did the trick. I'm inclined at this point to believe the later.

Either way... hope that helps some folks.

throw in a Dos bootdisk that supports NTFS, and edit boot.ini

It is your visual style or windowblinds skin. Try switching back to the default if that is indeed the XP version of ie7.

Raid Support anyone?

Just use your Windows XP drivers, they should work, and be sure to create a floppy disk with the drivers on it so you can install them during the setup process, or else the setup wizard won't be able to detect your harddisk.

    • I switched to AdGuard for this very reason. All my uBlock filters and user scripts ported over with no issues.
    • This is a hot take, but I only use "New" Outlook for 1 reason, the "My Day" side bar that shows your tasks and Calendar on "New" Outlook allows you to view shared calendars and not just your personal calendar. On "Classic" Outlook it only allows your personal Calendar. For my job, we have a group shared Calendar that shows appointments and scheduled tasks for the team and we don't really use our personal calendars.
    • Opera for Android gets redesigned home page with FIFA World Cup tracker by Taras Buria FIFA World Cup 2026 is kicking off in the United States later this week, and Opera, a popular cross-platform browser, is making it easier to track matches on mobile. Today, Opera announced a redesigned home page for its Android browser. The new home page is now "more immersive" with easier access to common browser features. Users can now customize Speed Dial icons (round, square, or squircle), enjoy a new weather widget with real-time conditions, and open AI Mode or a private session with a single tap. Additionally, the browser now has a built-in football tracker, allowing you to follow your favorite team without using dedicated apps. The tracker displays live scores, notifications, and statistics in a dedicated football hub. You can also check out line-ups, match events, and more. Opera surveyed its users, and 38% of responders said they plan to follow the FIFA World Cup 2026 in a browser. The tournament starts on June 11 and ends on July 19, 2026. "By providing football fans with instant access to live scores alongside a more considered design, we’re ensuring they are never more than a tap away from the action, even when they can't watch live," said Tim Lesnik, Product Manager at Opera Mobile. For Opera users in the United States, Opera runs a contest, offering them a chance to win tickets to a match in Miami in July, Android smartphones, PlayStation 5 consoles, smart TVs, and Amazon Vouchers. Users can participate by posting on social media with the #OperaFandom hashtag from June 12 or by signing up on the official Opera website. Opera will announce winners on July 3. You can download Opera for Android from the Google Play Store using this link.
    • That definitely doesn’t match my experience with using Outlook. I use the new Outlook with a local account, connected to a email account, that absolutely isn’t connected to a Microsoft account without an issue.   I used Thunderbird/Firebird once, lost some very precious emails and memories, because of the way it stored emails. Swore I would never use it again, it technically wasn’t the fault of Thunderbird, but an extension but the underlying reason it failed was due to the message format.
