Neowin folding @ home team!

Recommended Posts

Note to neobond/redmak: it would be helpful if you could put up a link on the main page to this, maybe under the UD cancer link :)

Those running UD cancer may have noticed a lot of connections problems over the past week. A bug in the server database code and the fact that thousands of computers are all trying to download 2 new clients at the same time are probably contributing to the problem.

Anyway, if you would like to switch to another distributed computing project until UD gets their stuff straightened out, or just don't like UD, I have created a Neowin folding @ home team. Folding is very similar to the United Devices project, in that it helps find interactions between molecules that could cure many diseases. Here's how to get started running F@H:

Download a client at the link below. The graphical client is recommended because it's easier to use and has a tray icon. You can set the rate at which it draws the pretty molecules. If you want you can just download the console client, which only runs it dos (not very pleasing to look at and you must get an extra program if you want to keep it running in your systray).

Graphical client (recommended):

Console DOS client:

clients for Linux and Mac are also available from the Folding @ Home website.

Ok, once you've installed the client, you must enter some configuration information. The most important thing to remember is the Neowin team number, which is 10448. Here's a screenshot of my config screen:

Make sure you enter a unique name by clicking on the User Stats button to see if that name has already returned results. Also make sure 10448 is in the team number field. You probably won't have to change anything in the connection tab unless you have dial up or go through a proxy. The only thing you might want to change in the advanced tab is the rate at which it draws the pretty graphics. I set mine to low. Hit OK and you will start crunching. One thing to note is that folding WUs seem to take longer than UD WUs. The average time for one WU is 1-2 days.

Here's a screen shot of the graphical client, it's very plain and simple:

Happy Crunching! :ninja:

Thanks.

Are you having any connection problems/backing off with the new client? I have 5 comps running it and some seem to be a little flaky. :ermm:
