My thoughts on IE7

Recommended Posts

after playing around with IE for the past few hours, I have the following to report

I enjoy the new RSS functions, it works much better than I was expecting it to.

I do not like the tabs above the toolbar, perhaps it is just personal opinion, but I feel that it is annoying.

CSS still does not work correctly. THIS is the biggest disappointment of all. I was really hoping that MS would have supported the standards.

All in all, I am quite positive that this will shape up into something great and I hope that CSS support comes along in a future beta,

^ I have IE7 but I downloaded a standalone version of IE6 and it passed everything too (although they both failed QuickTime as I don't have that installed).

I also dislike the tabs above the toolbar - reminds me of a spyware toolbar.

I like the RSS functions too, but as occularrifts said CSS support isn't quite there yet. The full screen looks good as all the toolbars slide away. Also, all transparent PNGs work :)

The phishing feature's an excellent one too.

All in all I'd say this is a great browser. I'm impressed.

Too be honest, IE7 is impressing the hell out of me right now, here is some of the reason why:

1) The RSS is just wonderful. The lay out is clean, easy to read and simple. Very nice

2) It renders pages MUCH nicer, much smoother and faster.

3) The tabs are smooth and I can't complain

4) I enjoy the GUI, it's very "future" looking and the learning curve is very small.

5) I find the Phishing Filter a neat little edition that needs more playing around with.

Overall a very stable and very nice build.

Thumb up MS.

IM7? Did you mean IE7?

If so, then no: I have no Google toolbar on IE7. I have a search box which can search using MSN/Google/Yahoo! etc. though.

I'm also pleased with the rendering - it's very fast :)

After some use: I'm disappointed with the toolbar arrangements and lack of CSS support. Ignore some of what I said in my previous post.

Just downloaded IE7 for Windows XP, and i must say this is a total clone of FF... everything is.. well how do you say it the same, the menus act whacko the tab bars are a joke, the search bar is a direct steal, the interface.. is ok, still they should of thought of somthing to act feel much more different.

overall this is just a clone.

one more downside that I noticed. in my task manager, there are 2 iexplore.exe processes one using 57Mib of RAM the other using 36Mib

I assume that IE spawns a new process when you create a new tab, but for wach tab to use ~30+Mibs of RAM is quite a lot.

also after closing the second tab, the second process still remains.

hmm. intersting. looks like I will have to file this as a nice little bug report.

One question...

Is it possible to install this beta build in Server 2003 SP1? I tried installing it by changing the compatibility mode to Windows XP, but still no go.

I didn't have the 2nd process problem with 5-6 tabs open at a time, so it's not a universal problem. (Yet a problem nonetheless.) It has impressed me heavily, I'm in the process of switching from Opera right now. My only gripe is that the Favorites menu does not work, it just "beeps at me" when I click it. Though the favorites toolbar does work, and I'm using a 3rd party program to manage my favorites anyway with a hotkey on my keyboard. (This is only a problem with my configuration, don't yell at me if you don't have the same experience. :p)

How can you guys sit there and tell people you are impressed? Have you tried any other browsers?

This browser is horrible. The UI, is horrible. The File/Edit etc toolbar is below the tabs, which is bad placement. The search bar in the top right is an EXACT copy from Firefox. Actually, the whole thing is a basic rip off firefox.

As for RSS, it doesn't have live bookmarks, which is a downer. The RSS reader formats it nicely, but when you can take a look at the titles in the sidebar (live bookmarks) who wants to load the whole feed into a page. Moreover, Sage works perfectly with firefox and its basically the same thing. MS, in this beta, has show almost no innovation. The one feature they did "innovate" is a minor thing. When you open a new tab, it also creates one to the side that you can swithc to and type in. Woopdiedo. Oh and I hear the RSS reader in IE7 is a complete rip off of Safari, but i can't attest to that.

One feature they did take the time to "innovate" on is a phishing protection tool. Course I've never been hit by phishing so I cant tell you how it works. Hwoever, firefox will surely have this soon.

The CSS standards are not living up. Most sites I visit are consistantly screwed up. That said, it is an improvement over IE6. now, this next issue could be my comptuer (but since it doesn't happen in firefox, i think it is IE). In IE6 and 7B1, Images are extremely pixelated and very poor quality. the Neowin logo is about the worst example ive seen. So are the renderings of the smilies.

All in all, this browser is a major update to IE6, but thats not saying much considering its been what? years since the last one? Firefox already has many features this won't ever have, not to mention extensions. I am by no means a firefox fanboy that won't ever switch back, but when MS comes up with this pretty lame attempt at a competing version, I can't help but turn my nose up. IE7 was supposed to be groundbreaking. Granted it is the first beta, it is VERY overhyped, overrated and ultimately sucky.

IE7 is no good at spyware, I compared normal usage for one hour with Firefox and one hour with IE on the same websites, and I got 9 tracing cookies with IE and 2 with Firefox.

:( I did like IE briefly though. :)

with 85% of the market....IE is the standard. w3c can say whatever the hell it likes but it counts for nothing in reality.

BTW: Did anyone figure out yet how to make Microsoft update work with it?
