IE7 and Windows Update

Recommended Posts

here? for the guys with problems:

# Extract IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe with WinRAR (or anything that works) to a temporary directory.

# Open update\iecustom.dll in a hex editor.

# Navigate to hexadecimal offset 0x1034h(4148 decimal) and change 0F 95 to 0F 94.

# Save and execute update.exe.

# Enjoy.

Ok as I just installed the Trial version of CygusTextEditor (latest) and then extracted the IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe with WinRAR to a temp directory on my DT, but my challenge has been opening up update\iecustom.dll---->and locating_navigating to:

hexadecimal offset 0x1034h(4148 decimal)...?? :blush::

Thanks again and looking forward to getting both Microsoft Update & WU v6 to work correctly with IE7...lol

lol...yikes as I have a Logitech v500 Cordless Mouse for my laptop with its 4-way solid state scrolling panel ans I have scrolled this dam iecustom.dll trying to locate this hexidecimal offset...

Tried Search within this hex editor and entered anything relating to the above, as this is all new to moi...

Help...please

It has nothing to do with an illegal key. I got the same problem and I tried with a genuine and an illegal key and they both do the same thing. Not happening to everyone though from what I see soo far.

Microsoft needs to fix that genuine thingy anyway cuz it checked b4 even installing and it still installed on the system with the illegal key.

Other than this the only issue I've had is the font on the RSS feeds sometimes looked blurred then I hit refresh and they look better and sometimes when I open Favorites it freezes for about 3 seconds before the list opens.

Apologies for another post however this has me quite perplexed...

Does any one of our collective membership have any other suggestions on how to get either WUv6 or MicrosoftUpdatev6 to work correctly in IE7_Beta1...

I have tried all these methods:

Will This Solve IE7 Issues W/both Microsoft & WU v6

ok, i did it on my own, you BS helpers,

people, go download hex workshop 4.2 (its free) and then open the iecustom.dll with the hex workshop 4.2

and go to "edit" and then "replace" and then type 0F95 and change it to 0F94 and save it

all done,

********************************************************************

Even just tried a 'supposely fixed WinXP_IE7_En.exe, no success at all, as WUv6 just keeps scanning......

I even opened up the iecustom.dll in the 'fixed_WinXP_IE7_en.exe' in HexWorkshop and hit 'Find' to make sure that I was indeed doing the above procedures properly and it reported: 0f94...so in theory it should work @WUv6...lol

Thanks...

The hex editing your going on about is for bypassing the validation on the installer of IE7. It wont affect any installed files, just means people with illegal keys can install IE7.

Hi DomZ,

Well that makes sense and thanks for the info...I have just posted on the IEBlog site, and there are others who too are having issues with both WUv6/MicrosoftUpdatev6 & IE7...

I will continue to periotically check that thread and see 'what the IE Team Devs' respond with...lol

I assume that because I do have WinXP SP2 set for 'Automatic Updates' that when/if a 'Critical Patch' does come out that my systray icon would come on, notifiying me that it is being D/L...and ready for installation when it finishes...?

As tester(s) just reported on the IEBlog:

"Windows Update doesn't work. On two machines I've tried it on it gets stuck on "Checking for updates for your computer..."; on a thrid machine it got past that bit, but the list of updates somehow ended up in what is normally the left-hand navigation area. "

"Also, Windows Update dont work with the new IE. It searches for the updates for a while, then screen messes up, like review opens in upa wrong frame/divider. And that search keeps searching. "

Prolly because that patched version has nothing to do with the Windows Update issue. The patched version was to turn off Windows Genuine Advantage because some people couldn't install it even if they had a genuine copy.

So before you go and make your little comments about "bs helpers" make sure you know what you're even downloading 1st.

lol so typical of someone who does not review that the two 'above statements' were copied & pasted directly from other member posts...

I have much more tact & diplomacy........

Yeah I noticed this too. Half the updates load on the left frame but the right frame remains the same. Its a problem, and I hope they fix it soon.

Well dont look at the scanning part. Few moments after it begins scanning, look at the bottom left panel of the update page where you would see all the updates. You can install them from there.

Unfortunately, I cant. Nothing shows up in there except a defunct "install updates" button.

One thing I want to point out is that IE7 worked with MU at first, however it is partly my fault that it does not work now.

As you know, there is a hack for the Genuine Advantage.. even though I am using a legal copy, I just could not resist trying that hack out LOL

Thus, with that single line javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

MU hasn't worked in IE7 ever since. It maybe a conincidence, but as far as I know, if it was for that, I bet MU is still running on IE7 just fine today.

Very interesting as I have been thoroughly exploring MSDN site, various Community News Groups, and many IE MS-MVP blogs, plus the IEBlog...

Most MVP's report that since IE7 is not a [Released product], WUv6 will not recognize it, thus all the issues...Revert back to IE6 in order to get proper 'scans from either WUv6 or MSUpdatev6, as another phrased it...

Another MVP stated that you must post your WUv6 issues on the IE7 Beta 1 MSDN Managed Newsgroup...........

However after reviewing a IE Product Manager's blog, there is no such IE7 Beta 1 MSDN Managed Newsgroup... and probably will not be since the Official Public Released Beta 2 'should' be available within 1-2 months...

Reports from the IE General Community Newgroup is there obviously is a issue with WU and IE7...

lol, not only does that work with windows update but it also doesn't ask me to validate my copy of windows. Which is nice :p .

if you  have  IE7 installed the  update works not  just use  an IE6 local standalone version from here : http://www.skyzyx.com/downloads/

run ie6 standalone enter the windows update Homepage url  and you can update :)

586302454[/snapback]

have the same error with IE7.

but this standalone IE6 worked for me very nice

it has no installer only a zip file... unzip it to any folder you want

then start iexplore.exe from that folder

type: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

and all your updates will work ;)
