I'm not a fanboy of ATI nor Nvidia but I have to give credit to ATI, they're very reliable on drivers I noticed over the years but this takes the cake. Good job ATI (Y) I bet Nvidia will have their driver out in a few months for Vista  Sigh.

well it appears the beta drivers from ATi do not work with my 9700 Pro AGP..

here is the situation

after finally getting the Vista install to go through. Upon boot up, the transparency effects were in full force. I then proceeded to install the latest nforce drivers, then the latest ATi drivers, but like a n00b, I installed the regular 5.7 for XP, so that hosed the transparency, so I discovered that there were Vista LDDM beta drivers for RADEONs, I DLed those, followed the install instructions from ATi, and still did not work. So I reverted back to the drivers that were used during first boot (what Vista installed by default, called 9700 Pro Family drivers.

but this didnt work either.

I think im gonna have to reformat and install Vista, unless anyone else has a suggestion??

Also - I remember noticing that since I have a HD Projector, when I was using the DVI-HDMI as opposed to the VGA-VGA connection that the transparency worked (with the default drivers on first boot though) but the transparency did not work over VGA connection... weird.

It looks like these hosed the Vista install on my laptop. I keep getting bluescreens saying the process timed out while trying to reset the video card. Blah.

try booting in VGA mode. You can select it by pressing F8 during boot.

That allowed me to change my drivers after hosing my system with the new ATI one.

There is your problem... It's the Nvidia GART driver that kills the video driver.

Did you install the GART driver?

I'm using an X300 and it works with everything using the default Vista LDDM drivers. :p

I don't see a need to use the updated ATI LDDM drivers: If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

yes, unistall all your Nforce drivers then reboot.

Go to device manager and roll back the only device left in "system" devices and reboot again.

At this point you should have the Aero running again, then reinstall the Nforce drivers (BUT NOT THE GART DRIVER) and bobs your uncle!! (if i remember!!)

thanks for the tip/suggestion i will try this when I get home.

but i might purchase a nvidia 6800GT, since I am using a HD projector, and when I use the DVI-HDMI cable to the projector the image loses around 5% (cutoff) around all the edges, this is fixable with the HD support in the ATi Catalyst Control Center App under XP, but since this is availble with Vista.. maybe I wont have this problem with an nivdia gfx card.. we shall see.. probably do some research to see if I can manually crop the HD signal like in XP, where it was running at 720p but cropped to somewhere around 1200x680 screen size but yet still 1280x720 visually

What are your systems spec other then the video card? I'm trying to figure out why none of the display drivers, other than the oldest MS driver (non LDDM) work.

I have an X700 on an Asus P5WD2 Premium board, P-830.

I wonder if another driver is screwing with the vid card. I havent manually installed any drivers since first boot.. but even first boot didn't work. i had to do "VGA mode" to get anything to work.

Any ideas?

(btw, i've now tried both 32, and 64-bit versions.. exact same problem)

It's sad to see lots of other people having GART problems like I had... installing them would often disable hardware acceleration in Windows, or disable AGP Texture Acceleration for games. Not only that, the nVidia IDE driver is awful and on all my systems (nForce, nForce2, nForce3, nForce4 - pure coincidence, btw) causes a 20-30sec hang on the XP loading screen and disables any DVD burners (CD burners are fine). I can't believe they still haven't fixed these problems, as they have cropped up in every driver release for about a year.

Now I'm on PCIe so don't need GART and I never install the IDE drivers. It's a real shame, as nVidia always used to have the best drivers around.

  • 3 weeks later...

The default drivers that come along with Vista seem to be fine with my 9500 Pro. But, still, it's a lot more sluggish than in XP. And, I've tried these beta drivers, and everything went to hell. I've reinstalled, and the only hardware changes I've made to it was the nVidia lan drivers and the nVidia sound drivers. Since that's all I've installed, should I try these beta drivers again to see if they make things better? Or should I just stick with what I've got for now?

I get a lot of VPU recoveries with Vista on my 9800 Pro 128MB. It freezes for ~5 seconds and then the screen goes black for a couple seconds. I get this sometimes every 15 minutes.

I'm using an x700 pro 128mb, and I get the effects working ok, but... the performance is terrible.

I've updated to the latest ATI drivers, and haven't felt much difference.

According to task manger "uxss.exe" is using abou 228,216mb ram and a further 40,716mb of vram. It's also taking up a hell of a lot of CPU cycles.

The overall feel is very sluggish and none too impressive.
