Mercury's atmosphere is near non existant due to it's distance to the sun and its history of bombardment from asteroid and/or comets
AionXn_
Awesome! Soon...people might go there..and build facilitys...and soon it'll be like Doom3 :) Seriously, this is a great discovery, I hope they could go underground and see if there really is a "frozen sea". :D
Bobster
Wow those images are awesome! As AionXn said, this is a great discovery, maybe they have a whole species of alien living underground :ninja:
Aaron Veteran Posted July 29, 2005 Veteran Share Posted July 29, 2005 I was watching the science channel yesterday and they were showing how life was found in Methane ice packs in the gulf of mexico some 2,000+ feet deep with no sunlight whatsoever, whoever says life can exist only on Earth is a total FOOL. 586292346 I was watching that last night as well, very cool stuff... y0sh
Wouldn't that ice be there from the comet that hit it? If it was a comet that struck Mars..
vincent
I was watching that last night as well, very cool stuff... 586292751 There trying to tap into to use as a energy source, problem is though with methane most experts believe it is a greenhouse gas, which is a   for our planet. vincent
Wouldn't that ice be there from the comet that hit it?If it was a comet that struck Mars.. 586292778 who knows... the crater itself is more than likely a remnant of a comet impact. I could go into more detail on how the Entire solar system bodies are pocked marked (including earth) with craters from asteroids and comets. the frozen water in this one though is puzzling, i personally have no clue as to how it formed there. One thing about comets is that there are made of ice and currently (but not for long) other unknown elements.

redfish
there is a theory that greenhouse gases used to heat up the surface will cause a melting of the polar ice caps and in turn produce an atmosphere. I was watching this on the science channel  586292261 from what i know about mars, any attempt to build an atmosphere by this means would fail because the atmosphere would leak into space due to mars not having sufficient gravity. the belief was that mars was once an active planet, which would have made it more possible for an atmosphere to be maintained. the belief was that the atomsphere of mars thinned and water disappeared when the planet became dead. this is of course from my reading 10 or so years ago, new data may show differently
Shining Arcanine
So much for the geniuses that discovered this a few years ago: http://home.aubg.bg/students/gsc040/images/uji_ne_mars.jpg all we need to do now is go there with a huge pollution machine and heat up the surface lol :) 586292232 It is at the martian north pole. If we can find solid water there, we could probably find liquid water at the martian equator. from what i know about mars, any attempt to build an atmosphere by this means would fail because the atmosphere would leak into space due to mars not having sufficient gravity. the belief was that mars was once an active planet, which would have made it more possible for an atmosphere to be maintained. the belief was that the atomsphere of mars thinned and water disappeared when the planet became dead. this is of course from my reading 10 or so years ago, new data may show differently 586293370 Mars has an atmosphere. Otherwise, Spirit and Opportunity would take pictures of space instead of the horizon. Edited July 29, 2005 by Shining Arcanine
Andre
How do they know it's H2O and not some other liquid substance in solid form.
Pwnadog
Whats the point of finding alien life forms? I mean, we find them, or we dont. If we dont, its a waste of money. If we do find them, they're less or more intelligent then us. If they are less intelligent, why should I care about them, and if they are more intelligent, they should have found us earlier then we found them, so what is the point of us searching for them?
Malisk
How do they know it's H2O and not some other liquid substance in solid form. 586293448 I thought they just made some spectral analysis on it. They can do that from space to at least analyse atmosphere composition, etc. And the rovers driving around do it all the time to check what mineral types they find. But on the NASA site, it said "it can't be frozen CO2" and I hope they just don't draw the conclusion from that? :p But maybe that's the only other possible thing that can be frozen and look like that according to current theories. It can't be too much after all, because a lot of stuff would evaporate too quickly. Methane can for example only be frozen up until -161 C. OPaul
Yea, they can tell the composition of planets light years away doing spectrum analysis. I'm sure the same holds true for that little spot on Mars.
