fvbounty
I've been looking at a Viewsonic vx 900 lcd, It has a 250nits of brightness and 500:1 contrast, with a fast response time, does anybody know if thats good enough for gameing like Max Paine or Half Life. Thanks for any help
Joseph Zollo
All that's important for gaming is that you have high refresh rates, and from what i've heard, flatscreens do not have good refresh rates. Can you link me to the page with all the specs?
frogg
Ya not to mention if you play in non-native resolutions you get a crappy picture.
fvbounty
Here's the Viewsonic link with the info, its says it has MVA to help with response time http://www.viewsonic.com/products/lcd_vx900.htm
Osiris
Seriously I didnt think LCDS couldnt play games? and to think I might have brofught one without looking into that.
Dazzla Veteran Posted July 1, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 1, 2002 That will be fine for gaming. If you're worrying about ghosting, that response time is quick enough for any game.
Osiris
Can you tell me what specs I NEED to have in an LCD, TFT if I want to play games?
fvbounty
I did some looking and I found on Tom's Hardware that you need a response time of 25ms or lower so you don't get ghosting with moving objects.
Osiris
I see Well does Anyone who uses an LCD at the momment and plays games, be able to post a screenshot or two of ingame performance?
Fedr0
Osiris, if I post a screenshot from my LCD, you'd notice the SAME graphics you'd have with a CRT. Is the output image (the one that comes from the monitor) that may look different. BTW, I have two LCDs, both Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo CTM7010. They're wonderful. Osiris
so it would indeed I dont know what I was thinking thanks for pointing that out fedr0.

Well, I'm not quite sure what good a screenshot will do seeing as we are talking about refresh rates. Anyway, here's a screenie of wolfy, I've put it in window mode to take a screenshot. I experience zero ghosting as well.
Intrabyte
on my other pc, I got a Nec V1530 15" LCD... and frankly, it plays FPS games very well. I can't see any "blury" images comparing to my CRT here and its as smooth too. The Nec V1550 15" LCD has been tested and they said it has EXCELLENT image quality. Who's They? thumper
It seems that fvbounty's question has been answered. Can we make a twist on the subject of this thread and ask the question of what you would recommend as the best LCD screen for gaming? What size would you choose? Would you use analog or digital (analog connection vs. DVI)? --Thumper
Osiris
Yeah im with thumper id like to know everything I can about what I NEED to be looking for when buying one.
digitaljames
I have no ghosting at all on my VX900 on a DVI connection to a Radeon 8500. I don't game much but the Unreal 2003 Demo runs flawlessly...... :old:
AMDTBurnt
actually, if you have the Viewsonic LCD, you can turn on smoothing so that things look like a normal CRT monitor, not crap like you see on games on laptop screens. BTW, I have 15" version of that monitor and it's KickAss?
mimeryme
i forget the actual model number, but i got this sony lcd in analog, though i was shopping for a dvi. :( anyway, screen quality is great as long as you set it to its native resolution. mine's a 15incher and maxes @ 1024x768. if you've got a decent vidcard and the correct drivers, games should run fine. correct drivers ensure that you can run the game at native resolution (of course, if the game supports it). can anyone tell me how much of a difference analog and dvi shows? oh yeah. if you're shopping for one, check the specs for viewing angles. it gets annoying if you look on from the side. there's a dark yellowish tint to the screen in mine when not viewing it straight on. Not much, I have only tried it on a 15 screen, and could tell no differance, I think on larger screens you can see improvments. I only used a few apps, no games in my test and the res was 1024x768 :)

Dazzla Veteran Posted July 3, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 3, 2002 Originally posted by Osiris Can someone tell me what DVI stands for? and what its meant to do exactly? Screens without DVI convert from digital to analogue then back to digital. With DVI it is pure digital from the graphics card to the LCD screen. Best possible image quality. Of course, the graphics card has to have DVI out as well...
thumper
Ok, now I have a GF4Ti4600 w/ DVI out. Right now I'm playing a lot of games and learning a bit about photoshop. I'd like to entertain the idea of having a 17" or larger LCD, but so far I haven't been convinced that I won't see any quality loss. I play a lot of FPS games, and image quality is of great importance. Would you recommend an LCD or stick to CRT? I'd also like to know the problems associated with running a game in a "non-native" resolution on an LCD.

I'd also like to know the problems associated with running a game in a "non-native" resolution on an LCD. An LCD screen has a set amount of pixels. A 17" screen will more then likely be 1280 x 1024. This means that there are physically 1280 pixels wide and 1024 down, you can't change that. What happens when you change to a lower resolution is it does one of two things" 1) Blends the pixels close to eachother leading to a blurred look. 2) Places the image in a windows with black pixels making a frame. The LCD screen cannot alter itself to contain say 800 pixels across. If you play a lot of FPS games then you need to look for an LCD screen with low response times. This will make sure that there isn't any ghosting. As for quality loss, there won't be any. With a DVI input the image is perfectly bright and geometrically perfect. I couldn't go back to CRT.
