How to fix dual boot(vista/xp)

Recommended Posts

Hi

I installed winxp on C and Vista beta1 on another disk(g:). Today, I formated C: and reinstalll WinXP. Now the Longhorn bootup menu is disappeared.

I tried to boot with the installation DVD and try to use the "fix boot" option but failed(seems that this function is not finished in this beta). So is there anyway to fix it manually?

Thanks!

this is a guess but edit the boot.ini file on the xp installation and add the following line:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Vista Beta 1" /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /FASTDETECT /USENEWLOADER /DETECTHAL

edit the disk and partition parts so that it refers to your vista installation. for example mine is on the second partition on the primiary disk. if yours is on the first patition of the secondary disk then it would be disk(1) and partition(1).

please sombody correct me if im wrong...

please dont edit yout boot.ini file if your not confident- im not taking any responsability!

This wouldn't work, it seems that the osloader for xp can't loader Vista...:(

sorry your right, i tried the loader and it didnt even get the the vista boot screen

i notice vista made some 'bootsect' backup, so maybe aquiring what the installer replaces it with and putting it on your xp drive would work.

again im guessing here... once wrong allready
