How do I uninstall Internet Explorer 7?

Recommended Posts

For some reason System Restore got disabled. I don't know why but I wanted to test out the beta and see how it was and it sucks, I can't even use Trillian anymore or use Windows Update. It's 100% critical that I uninstall IE 7, I can't afford to reinstall Windows at this time. Any ideas on manual uninstall?

Uninstall it in the Add/Remove programs control panel. Make sure the "show updates" box is checked.

It should be in the updates section of Add/Remove Programs. If not, check your windows folder for "$NtUninstallie7beta1$"

I followed these steps including restarting and ie 6 does not show up. I have attempted to use the ie6 DL from MS but it tells me there is a newer version. I have also tried the registry editing technique with no luck.

Anyone else have any ideas on how to uninstall ie7

Thanks

HI guys,

Hi have a big problem  , I install IE7, and it was fine, but because of other problems (audio), I have to re-install XP SP2, so now I don't have IE, when I tried to start IE7, This message appears: " The procedure entry point InternetGetSecurityInfoByURLW could not be located in the dynamic link library WININET.dll.", If I tried to reinstall IE7, I get the mesage that IE7 is already installed, but because I reinstall XP, I can't Uninstall IE7 because there is nothing under "Add or remove programs" (even when "show updates" is checked) in the control panel, neither is the folder on "C:\windows\$NtUninstallie7beta1$" I know it was there so I went to try to recover (Using programs to Undelete), but nothing. I think Windows overwrite this. And if this is not enough, I can't install IE6, because windows says that a newer version is already intalled. I tried to modify the windows registry following this MS bulletin, but doesn't work.

I don't know what to do. And, because "Microsoft Update" and "Windows Update" only works on IE, I can't update my computer.

I thank you for any help. :D

I think I have a solution to the above mentioned problems, as I was also using IE7 till yesterday and was not able to uninstall it. But thanks to my "Software Testing" habit, I always use this small free cleaning utility program named "CCleaner". It not only cleans your sytem but olso has an option to uninstall unwanted programs from your PC. Try it out, It'll come in handy. After you install and execute this program, on the left Navigation Pane you'll find a button labeled "Tools", click on it to find IE7, that's it! follow this link to download FREE "CCleaner": http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp

I hope this will serve the purpose

I tried the program, and it is handy, but because of the reinstall of XP, there is no log file to unistall, so don't appear in the window.

I think I need to do it manually, but until now I can't.

Thanks, anyway.

I'd just reinstall windows at this point. You're going to spend more time trying to figure out how to fix it than you would just reinistalling windows.

I did it, twice, but still the problem, I can't use IE7, nor uninstall, nor reinstall. :|

I turn off Windows restore, start on safe mode, copy from another computer internet explorer folder (IE6), when I restart, IE6 works partially, but when I went to "Microsoft Update" and try to install "Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1" donsn't work.

Then I modify the regristry, and windows told me that IE has been removed form my system. so I tried to install IE6, but told me that another newer version is arleady installed.

And, if I try to install IE7, just go half way, and then prompt me an error ("Access Denied"), and when I click OK, my computer restart itself.

I must be forgotting something.

After hours of trying, I learn somethings:

  1. If you install IE7 in XP SP2, Do not reinstall XP, without FIRST uninstall IE7. Because once you reinstall, IE won't work.
  2. If you did it, the only way restore IE is overwriting Internet explorer folder (C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer), with IE6 from another computer, (in Safe Mode and Windows Restore OFF). Now it will work but you won't be able to update you computer using "Windows Update", and another troubles. :o
  3. If you want to use IE without any problems, the only way is reinstall XP (make a new FRESH installation overwritting the old.) or update to Vista (I did this). Of couse if you make a fresh install of XP you have the risk to lose all you documents. And you will have to reintall every program.

I hope this help. :)

Hi,

even i faced the same problem now. I searched for the "C:\windows\$NtUninstallie7beta1$" in my system, but because i had reinstalled XP SP2 again it had overwritten it and got the same error as yours. I even tried the CCleaner software, but even it show IE7 in the Tools list of it and even searched all over the net (using another browser called "SlimBrowser"), but found nothing on the net which is useful and could resolve the problem quickly without headache. Then i did something which made XP to install IE6 without any problem just as it was before i installed IE7.

What I did was i just cut and pasted the Internet Explorer folder, "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer", into another drive. When windows was doing the pasting it showed an error stating that the IE folder has been tampered and it needs to reinstall it and asked me to insert the Win XP SP2 CD in the drive.

I inserted the CD and the "Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP" menu (as shown in pic XPSP2.1.jpg) came and in the I clicked the "Install optional Windows components" option which inturn opened a new window "Windows Components Wizard" (as shown in pic XPSP2.2.jpg). In this windows the checked the "Internet Explorer" option, even though it showed 0.0 MB on the right side, and clicked "NEXT" which reinstalled all the windows components along with IE6 which came with the XPSP2 CD. And now I am using IE6 same as before and am going to upgrade to IE7 again.

Hope this will solve your problem. If it works, plz inform me through my mail id: ettanps@gmail.com so that i can help others who face this situation.

Thanks

I uninstalled IE 7 and it broke my security zone levels in IE 6. Has this happened to anyone else? In "Internet" zone it is forced at custom and I can't revert it back to medium.

Just rename this file: "C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.txt" to spuninst.bat and run it

Works a treat, thanks!

Uninstall it in the Add/Remove programs control panel. Make sure the "show updates" box is checked.

What if I don't have a show updates box???

When i choose to uninstall IE7 Beta 3 or IE7 (both of which are still installed), my computer shuts down and nothing is accomplished!

Even when running 'spuninst.exe' this causes my computer to shut down. I've uninstalled IE6 using the registry setting the "IsInstalled" value from 1 to 0.

I've also tried reinstalling IE6 using the full 'ie6setup.exe' but the program will not run, nor will the actual wizard inside the self-extracting file.

I wanted to uninstall IE7 because it will not show any pages, and I have tried disabling the 'add-ons' in Internet Options but this still will not work. I think it has messed around with some port / proxy settings (according to Windows Live Messenger / MSN) for WLM/MSN will not work and troubleshooting it comes up with there being problems with key ports / proxy settings / firewall...

I also tried renaming 'spuninst.txt' to 'spuninst.bat' .. though i'm not sure that did anything :\

My internet in general still works - using FireFox anyway... but I can't system restore so I'm kinda stuck?!!!

Please help!

Regards, Tim

Arg!!! I've tried all of the above suggestions and still can't get ie7 to load pages OR uninstall it and get ie6 to print or allow popups.

Out of the five computers in the accounting department here only two are fully functional after upgrading to ie7. The other two were easily rolled back to ie6 but the last one is absolutely giving me fits!

Any further advice?

Darcy
