DVD Player what do I look for

Recommended Posts

get a nice Apex for $80 at Circuit City, the thing plays anything you throw at it. CD, MP3, VCD, SVCD XSVCD, DVD, , photo CD, mpeg1 and mpeg2 files on a data CD. Yeah, the one I have only svideo out but thats all i need. Nice remote too.

Make sure it can read CD-Rs. Not all of them can for some reason. VCD playback is a plus :p

And I do recommend Philips products. very nice.

I agree with the progressive scan output. Ain't got a DTV yet but i'd wish I had a dvd that would support it.

But my things are:

Progressive Scan

DD and DTS pass throught or optical or coaxil outs to hook up to decoder

mp3 playback would be nice

If you got the cash dvd-rw built in, and dvd-audio(not same as a dvd video music cd, dvd audio is a seperate spec)

And regionless playback for import porn ;-)

This ones nice but cant record :

All in all thats a nice unit I was just going to get a DVD player for my computer and a DVD TV Out video card and later a DVD burner

when the prices level off.

I have both and I prefer the standalone.

Some DVD's won't like playing on your DVDROM with tvout enabled, depending on how you hook it up.

You need to have a system that is powerful enough to play the dvd skip free.

You have to run the cord all the way to the tv, and also run the audio cable to the tv, which for me is a pain, maybe your tv is closer however.

Also without a remote control, you'll have to get up to change things, pause etc. Of course you might have a wireless mouse which would help, or an ATI Remote Wonder, or not.

All in all for me a standalone was the better choice, but I suppose for some a DVDROM/Tv out card might be a good solution.

I wouldnt go with an Apex. I got a RCA RC5240P and it has played everything I have thrown at it (VCD, SVCD, DVDR, DVD) without a single prob. Got it at BJs Wholesale Club for $130.

Yes Standalone players all the way!

dont do any of this tvout crap, just buy one seperately it will be well worth your money.

Just as a question thats been plaging me, I recently got into a debate with my mate over brand name ranks, eg does NEC fare better of samsung etc and where phillps rate in that

so if you check this thread out, and have some time

feel free to rank the following for me, in order of how you think they go

from best brand to worst brand

This is just a random list. You place them from best to worst and then reply back to this thread with how YOU rank them.

- Sony

- LG

- Teak

- Panasonic

- Samsung

- Toshiba

- NEC

- Sharp

Thanks for your input in advance.

phillips sucks, toshiba is better than you rated also, I'd probably rate them second after sony right over Pioneer

Dude that wasnt how I rated them.

I just threw them up on a list, I wanted other people to rank them from best to worst. that list is just in random order.

Right on andy. :ninja:

I got that DVD Player to and for RCA it rocks. Its got all the outputs including 2 sets of video/audio outs. The quality is beautiful with SVIDEO. Its got all digital audio outs.

On top of that it plays like anything. MP3, SVCD, VCD, DVD, DVD-R, XVCD. It reads CD-R and CD-RW. Great DVD Player :)
