Installing Vista Beta 1

Recommended Posts

How do you install it? Do you have to reformat your computer through the Windows XP command prompt or does the Vista DVD have the reformatting and partitioning on it?

Don't say put it on a spare partition, as my computer has one partition and that is using up the whole of the space on my hard drive.

I have two HDD's, a 120GB one which I have for XP, and I've split my 60GB HDD into two; roughly 30GB for backups and roughly 30GB for Longhorn Beta 1.

So I don't have to do anything within XP. Just backup my files, boot from the Vista CD and then I just follow the options to reformat then do the partition?

If thats the case, I'm gonna leave some space to install XP too, so I can use both!

The DVD is capable yes, but three things to bear in mind first:

-If this is your only PC and Vista doesn't natively support your network card then nuking XP will prevent you getting online to get a network driver - download it beforehand and put it on a USB key.

-Beta1 is VERY patchy, lots of unsupported devices, all the drivers are REALLY early, it's not worth dedicating a machine to just yet.

-If you have >10gb spare on your XP partition you can just defrag, resize it and create a new additional partition for Vista without the headache or uncertainty.

Legitimate beta testers know that the disc can do the above because it's in the provided installation notes...

Or just resize the XP partition and save the trouble.

If you're going to reinstall XP it has to go on BEFORE Vista otherwise it will nuke the Vista boot manager.

OK, I won't install XP then, I'll leave it as Vista for a while then switch back!

I have a Netgear WG111 wireless adaptor, do the drivers on it's CD work?

Very few WiFi devices work properly, download the latest XP friendly copy and cross your fingers.

But seriously, Vista isn't ready to be a primary OS for anyone... and you're making it increasingly clear you acquired the version you intend to use by less than legitimate means.

This is how I did it when I used LH4008:

1. Resized C drive with Partition Magic (I think there are free partition programs out there), made 15GB of free space.

2. With PM I made a new primary partition, D.

3. Installed LH onto that partition.
