Simon Veteran Posted August 1, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 1, 2005 I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite a70 laptop with 3.0 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM (expandable, not sure how much), and a Raedon 9000 mobility video card. How well will my system work with Vista, and will my video card have an LDDM driver/will I be able to enable all the visual effects?
HoochieMamma
Pretty sure your not going to get anywhere with such a low end card. It's not DX9 so Vista == (N).
Simon Veteran Posted August 1, 2005 Author Veteran Share Posted August 1, 2005 Really? I didn't think it was a bad card. I thought it was at least DX9
Xtreme $niper
Yeah all X### cards are DX9 compatible. You should look into perhaps upgrading your video card to at least a X300 mobility radeon.
HoochieMamma
Nope. DX8.1. http://www.ati.com/products/mobilityradeon9000/
Simon Veteran Posted August 1, 2005 Author Veteran Share Posted August 1, 2005 Any idea how much that would cost? EDIT: to upgrade the card
Rob2687
You should make sure your laptop card is upgradeable...I don't think very many laptops are.....

Xav
ATI do have a standard of removable graphics module now for laptops, but I've not heard of it being used on SKUs as low as the Radeon 9000. That GPU is 4 years old now, below entry level if that's possible...
Martog
Actually the 9000, 9100, and 9200 series are misleading that they are DirectX, as generally the first number said what generation DirectX they were, but those were only 8.1, a bit misleading at the time. Since then we have learned, and know that the X(10) series are not DirectX 10 as it isn't even out, and is probably going to be what they are switching DX over to in Vista anyhow. Sammyinnit
Can I get my 9250 to work? I am sure I read it was DX9, but now I am unsure... is there a way I can start DWM manually like I had to in 5048?
sunbiz_3000
I think Aero Glass still has quite a lot of bugs to sort out..... like a small "Title Bar" always being displayed before the actual window, Random angles for starting windows, vibrating minimize at times.....and a lot more !! I think you should not just dump that old Dx8.1 card so soon. Let the Aero Glass mature a little and then try it out. I think you may get a better card at the same price when Beta2 comes out and Aero Glass is a little more finished. Also you may have Aero Special (or whatever it will be called) in Beta2 looking at which we will all drool !! :woot:

NienorGT
Sorry, 9250 = DX 8.1 the **50 Mean a lower card. It's not a new core, It's even 10 MHz less than a 9200 I think...

Simon Veteran Posted August 1, 2005 Author Veteran Share Posted August 1, 2005 Nope, the video card is ot replacable. That means that the laptop that I bought because I thought it would work with Longhorn (at the time), was a waste of money, I would have been fine with my old one. Ugh. I won't even be able to use TweakVista, will I?

karma_police
True and I don't think NVIDIA will provide LDDM drivers for mobile users but you can always go to http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ , I used to get modded drivers there but I don't have nvidia anymore.
