FojackedDolt
I hear boastful claims from Opera, declairing that they render their pages the fastest. But also, they have ad's. So maybe, for fast cable, rendering the data would be more imporntant that the actual bandwidth factor. But seeing as how im on slow (...SLOW SLOW SLOW) dial up. What browser would be best for me? would oprea still help me? if i've got this all messed up, just shoot me in the balls.

+Warwagon MVC Posted August 1, 2005 MVC Share Posted August 1, 2005 it was funny, I've used firefox for 2 years and i've never come across a page that didn't like firefox. So I installed and opened Opera and in about oh 3 mins I got to a page that refused to load successfully

sachleen
Though true, some (a lot) of pages dont like to show up on Opera, but it is fast. Firefox's scrolling is a bit choppy and it just is not as fast as Opera, but ever since IE7 BETA 1 came out, I have been using that with no problems at all except for HP's site which has extreamly small fonts. It does everything Firefox and Opera do and its free and fast.
msing
Opera has an instant back feature, so instead of reloading the page, it uses a cache of that website. It's faster, trust me :).

Certainly no memory issues (with multiple tabs open or otherwise.)

jp10558
I was on sloooooww dialup for years. I had a whole cocktail of software setup to speedup my dialup (21.4 Kbps). As some software has changed, some of my programs are no longer necessary... Anyway, here's what I used - gave me (as I usually visited the same 6 sites during the day for 50% of my browsing) ~ 25% speed improvement over vanilla IE6. One, I used Opera (8.02 right now) which I bought so no ads. Because it prioritizes the loading, you usually will get the text content way before IE does (as IE6 tends to not show anything till a large portion of the page is loaded) so you might be able to pick the next page without waiting for the full page load. Also, the instant back/forward saves a lot of time over IE6's reloading the page. Oh, and in Opera 8.x, the caching has been significantly improved, so you're not loading as much anyway - many of the layout images are saved. [Note, if you often close Opera and re-open it, a caching proxy like Allegrosurf is still recommended, and will make a difference (even on broadband, but really on dial-up)] Then I use proxomitron to remove a bunch of the ads and other crap so that also saves a lot of time. I also used to use www.webwarper.net for free gziping of pages that didn't do that anyway, but more and more pages are gzipped anyway now so that's not as imperitive, plus some people do get wigged about the privacy aspect. If you do use webwarper, I had some prox filters that removed ads from it, and cached the js/ad thingy it wanted to dl all the time. Anyway, if I were you, I'd start with Opera + a good proxomitron install, perhaps the grypen one I use. Oh, and change the way you work if you can - basically load one page you want to look at for a while, and then middle click and open the other pages you'll want after this one in the background, or have a bookmark folder to open while you're reading page 1. This is "manual prefetching" but very easy in Opera, and will also save time usually. Then, if you still want more speed I'd look into a caching proxy that might be more agressive than Opera is. Then I'd look into either getting an accelerator such as slipstream or broadband...

l0g0ut
opera with admuncher installed... that's what i used on my dialup. admuncher even stops ads from downloading in opera adbar.
Denis W. Veteran Posted August 4, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 4, 2005 I'd have to agree with many of these people who mention Opera for dialup connections. It sure helped me back when I was on dialup - IE was dog slow, and at the time Firefox was still in beta, so I didn't bother trying it. Now for broadband, neither browser matters - Opera is sometimes faster than Firefox for some sites, and vice versa.
fred65
I've been a dialup user too. I tried FF and IE, IE was considerably faster than FF. I think i'll have to give opera with admuncher a try. I like the prefetching idea.

TechMaster
I tried Opera 7.5 , 8.0 Beta and final.. it is fast. a way faster that IE And FF.. but the problem is that it has a lot of problems with rendering in some pages. some times it stucks and doesn't even render the page. so on Dial-up use Opera and keep FF in hand for use on some pages that don't load easily.. on Broadband. check Opera it has also some nice features over IE and FF. but I think you will get ****ed off from the pages that don't load correctly..
