Seth McFarlane I believe has said that everyone understands the baby, but they don't take him seriously. But it's best not to overthink it, it's a completely surreal show.

I think they can, but like others said, they don't pay attention/care. This reminds me of the episode where Peter has is own country (Petoria), and the guy at the end asks the same question.

Brian: understands stewie clearly

louis: she only hears what she wants to hear

peter: can't understand stewie / doesn't speak to him

chris: can't understand stewie / doesn't speak to him

meg: she only hears what she wants to hear

Brian fully understands Stewie. The rest of the family understand in general what Stewie is trying to express or wants although he fully speaks english..

That's how I see it, and family guy rocks! TO THE PETERCOPTER!

"I thought this was kids say the darndest things, not annoying old black men wont shut the hell up" :D

I say yes, because you see Stewie interacting with other people all the time.

But what we're forgetting is... Peter is retarded.

It's not whether or not they can understand Stewie, it's whether or not they choose to. Brian talks with him all the time because he's the only other person in the family that's on the same intelligence level as he is. Lois doesn't take him seriously since he's 1, a lot of you wouldn't take a 1-year-old seriously if he said that kind of stuff either, would you?

Some things I noticed though, it seems to be the adult men (the Man in White, the rich people in Peter, Peter, Caviar Eater) and baby girls (Janet and Olivia) that can (or choose to) understand him and not so much the adult women.

Then again, Seth wanted it that way to confuse all of us.

I think They Understand Him,But Just Not completly,As Someone said they Just seem to Ignor it,Perhaps Only Brain(the dog) can Only Talk to Stewie Fluntily. Also Watch the Movie And You'll See Him Talking to (some1) not Brain Fluntily.

I always figured that what the grown-ups hear is just Stewie making baby noises. They never respond to what he is saying only to what he is doing.

Brian can understand him, though, because theoretically they are in the same situation: humans can't understand dogs and don't understand babies, so Stewie and Brian can relate.

Could be way off though :)

I don't know if anyone mentioned this already, but they actually discuss this in the comentary on the DVDs; mostly in the first season I believe. Origionally they didn't want the family to be able to understand Stewie, because it made for better jokes. You'll notice a lot in the first season Stewie will threaten to kill Lois mother but she'll just respond with something unrelated. However, later on certain jokes wouldn't work without them being able to understand him, so they just went with that too.

And I do believe Brian was always able to hear Stewie.

I don't think the family understand him at all except for the dog.

The dog and the baby talk all the time together however the other members don't speak at all to him in a understanding way. It's all one way talk to him and back to them. Watch the show closely and you'll see :)

i basically agree....or maybe, the family could understand him completely if they actually tried, but i kind of get the impression that since he is a baby, they just treat him like one and assume that he can only speak like a normal baby, despite the fact that he is very fluent in his oddly english accent....

either way, family guy rules and is hilarious

post-125502-1125324485.jpgYes, they understand Stewie.

He spoke to Lois and she responded on 2 seperate occasions. In the episode where Brian couldn't control peeing all over the place, Stewie walks in as Brian is convincing Lois that it was Stewie who wet the carpet. He's holding a sandwich and he asked her what kind of sandwich it was. Lois RESPONDS that it was tuna fish to which he replied that he thought it was cat food and mayonnaise.

In the episode where the A/C is broken, Stewie enters the living room in a diaper and says to Lois "Am I to walk around all day looking like a beggar child in Calcutta? Put some clothes on me now or I shall alert Children's Services." Lois RESPONDS "Don't threaten mommy, Stewie."

There was also an episode where Stewie, wanting to be taller, took over Chris's mind. He attached a device to Chris's hat so that Chris would say whatever he wanted him to. If they can't understand Stewie, how would that be possible?

Even Meg has spoken to Stewie. In the episode where Stewie is taken by child services because Meg has them believing that Stewie is a crack baby so that she can work at the pancake house, she tells Stewie to tell everyone he is a crack baby and they understand him.

I think the family just accepts the fact that Stewie is uber intelligent and they leave it at that.

Well I mean we know that Family Guy is the most realistic cartoon on the market. Clearly if Stewie, being somewhat of 2 years old, can create a mind control device, it would just be impossible for him to translate baby talk into english.

Somebody had to say it. :D

They can understand him as much as you can understand any baby. Think about it: Stewie seems to be at the stage where most babies can say some words, but can't really form complete sentences or hold conversations. But you can still figure out what they want most of the time because you can interpret their noises or crying or whatever. There are a lot of instances on the show that go something like...

Stewie: <goes on some angry rant about how stupid someone is or something or how he wants to kill Lois>

Lois: Aww, looks like somebody's cranky, time for a nap!

That tells me that they hear that he is upset, but they think he's just tired, not plotting world domination. The reason Brian can understand him perfectly, I think, is that the show's writers are playing off an old myth that animals and babies understand each other.

They CAN understand Stewie when he actually speaks simply, like a baby normally speaks; the episode of "Kids Say the Darndest Things" was a perfect example of that.

That's exaclty what I think!
