Malisk
It's beta 1, what did you expect? UI polishing generally comes later. 586324536 Reminder: Many believe the UI "polish" in Windows XP made it ending up worse off than XP Beta 1 and Watercolor, with a horribly childish looking Luna theme in the RTM. Many of the people here are extremely confident in how things we can only guess will look. Be careful not to promise too much. We're talking about Microsoft's UI team here, not Apple's. Microsoft has never been known to be kings of UI design.
Ghostdraconi
It isn't customizable now? 586325546 You can use Ctrl + Mouse Scroll Wheel to change the size of the icons (except for the desktop)
redfish
Well yea I don't like the icons in Beta 1. The worst thing about them is that they don't all take up the same type of space in the grid, so for instance the microsoft paint icon is skinny and the recycling bin icon is fat,.. so when icons are lined up they look horrible together. They also have too much of a hard and flat look. About the Windows XP icons... there are some I do like; what I don't like is how many of them are funned-up and made to look clumsy, like the large arms hanging off of the MSN messenger icon. Also just the fact that they are tilted on an angle make them look horrible on a toolbar set; especially the 'home' icon in IE which looks like a big block. But some of the icons are done well. If you ever see the Geeks Bearing Gifts video that has a beautiful icon for a folder. I hope the icons change by the time its released, very much. I don't care that the system is customizable, I am thinking of it as a product. And besides if they include ugly icons as the default, that means all programs made will try to match the ugly icons, and you'll have to create more and more icons to suit your taste, out of scratch. Just make some nice icons, Microsoft:) (btw OSX icons suck also)
LTD
Vista is designed (and needs to be) the OS for EVERYONE - businesses and consumers, and their cats and dogs, the whole lot. Alot of people don't like the icons in this beta, alot of people don't mind them, and alot of people like them. This sort of thing usually results in a stalemate. No point in arguing about it. There are plenty of people who despise the Aqua/brushed look of OS X just as much as they despise the Luna-style interface of XP. Yet, people usually manage to get used to the "look" of their OS if they actually use it for work and entertainment on a daily basis because the functionality is there. The most important thing is to get the funcionality just right. For example, the Start Panel, combined with the taskbar in XP is a thing of beauty and genius. Simplicity at its best. Even a little kid can use it. THAT is what really matters. If icon-design is going to prevent you from using an easy-to-use, highly functional, well-supported OS that runs an ocean of software - both free and for-pay, then you need therapy, not new icons. fred65
Hopefully we can have themes without the need for Windowblinds. Maybe the themes could have different sets of icons - kids, professionals, beginners etc. I quite like the vista icons, instead of shiny XP, they are glossy. It would be cool to have a matt icon set, that seem less high colour, sort of classy (hard to explain). M$ please rid us of those old icons from win95/3.1. They are disgusting!! If M$ wants to make average people believe that this is a new O/S, they need to make everything look new, but keep the familiarity.

Oh, now, I don't know about that. But at least it does appear that Microsoft is going to allow people to reset the sizes of icons to reasonable levels and even use a Classic mode to get the Windows 2000 look, which should satisfy most people, I would hope. Plus, there are bound to be third party tools to help people customize the look of the OS, such as IconX or other Stardock stuff. That way, businesses can be happy and consumers can be happy, as they will have the configuration choices they need / desire to be productive and enjoy the OS. :) M$ please rid us of those old icons from win95/3.1. There's nothing wrong with making them available as an option, now is there? There are those Windows 2000 users to consider, after all. They are not hurting anything by being there, now are they? Kr0z
Not that it matters. But I like them. Much nicer than the Windows XP ones.

XP icons are quite customizable, for instance, and if I recall correctly, Microsoft even encourages folks to customize XP - I think this info is on their site, or at least it was a few years ago. It isn't easy to accomodate everyone's tastes, but as long as Vista's (default) icons will look better than XP's I won't complain.
Matt T
I agree - they are fugly icons, but thankfully this is beta 1. And what's with those 256x256 icons - are they really necessary?
