What gift will beta testers receive

^^

IMO not really the more average smart people that test it the better it will be the more money the will make of it etc... I think it smart of microsoft to let complete strangers test it.

I have a question. If you obtain Vista Beta 1 through...alternative means (torrents, Newsgroups, IRC, whatever), do you still get to submit bugs? Or do you have to like sign in to a site to submit them? I think they could get a lot of feedback from people who get it through shady mediums. Since people who know how to get it off IRC and stuff are usually pretty good at computers, they could prove very useful as bug reporters ;)

If Microsoft accepts bug reports from individuals who they *know* have obtained Vista illegally, it would be tantamount to condoning (and even encouraging) piracy. No matter how useful it might be, they wouldn't go for it.

I think its just thoughtful of Microsoft to let complete strangers test Windows... for free (cept MSDN)

I'm not a complete stranger :shifty: at all.

So you can't report bugs on a pirated version? That really sucks..Since many people would pirate it anyways, MS might as well make use of it :s

I'm not saying you can't - I don't know if you can or can't.

All I am saying is that if MS knows (by whatever means) that you obtained Vista illegally, it would be highly unlikely they would knowingly accept bug reports on it. Microsoft would not openly (or even privately) encourage piracy, at least not by that means.

The Microsoft Beta Client, which is the official method of bug reporting for official beta testers, has an option to file bug reports anonymously. Official beta testers would be logging in with their Passport, but when you use the anonymous option, it doesn't ask for any identifying information. So yes, it's possible for the people who obtained Vista through "alternative distribution" to submit bug reports.

It's not about getting anything from them, but an experience, as well a genuine way to preview it, furthermore, the letter you get back will also look nice on your CV.

The sig:

Basically, alot of techies talk about "innovation" and throw around these nebulous terms, as if they really mean something. Apple and Microsoft really didn't do alot of innovating when it came to the actual idea of a GUI. Xerox was the first to create a GUI, not Apple or MS, and then Steve and Bill based their ideas on what Xerox did (hehe, Steve did, and Bill claims he did.)

Several people went from SRI to Xerox PARC in the early 1970's. The Xerox PARC team with Merzouga Wilberts, codified the WIMP (windows, icons, menus and pointers) paradigm, first pioneered on the Xerox Alto experimental computer, but which eventually appeared commercially in the Xerox 8010 ('Star') system in 1981.

Apple simply made the first commercially successful GUI. Although it is actually incorrect to claim that Apple "copied" or "stole" PARC's work, the ongoing joke in the industry - a product of heavy competition combined with alot of zealotry, is that Apple stole from Xerox, and Microsoft in turn, also stole from Xerox (and Apple, if you're an Apple zealot.)

So, metaphorically, Apple first broke in to Xerox's "store" and took something, and so Bill is simply saying that Apple didn't do anything very special after all, in light of Xerox's accomplishment, and he's got just as much "right" to do his own thieving. This metaphor is also a clever way of deflecting the accusation that MS copied Apple.

u will not receive any gift but u will able to download the RTM version for free as a beta tester

Source? Are you sure about that? Just wondering. That would be really sweet. Hey, I've submitted 20 bugs so far (approx.) Usually MS is decently generous.

For testing Office 2003, I got some little things... like MS pen and crap like that.

For testing MSN Explorer... I got 2.5 years worth of Encarta subscriptions.

For testing MSN Messenger, I got a webcam that's worth 60+ USD.

I hope we get something cool! I mean, I wasn't expecting anything much, but if we do... AWESOME!
