Max
lo there, i am all out of ideas when it comes to this problem and i was hoping someone else might be able to lend me a hand... now, yesterday i booted up b0x for some nice laning, after loading wc3, a game that is usually fine and 100% stable, i was confronted with this... now, the entire screen seemed to be buggered up with these insane lines and what seemed to be corrupted textures. i wondered if the gfx ram on my lovley new gf4ti4600 could be busted! after a few moments thought, i was asking myself why windows(xp) was fine, and free of any gfx errors. i loaded up trusty UT and found that it was running fine, textures were perfect... 'ah must be a software problem then' i thought. after ****ing around for about an hour, reinstalling twice and trying various drivers and settings (rivatuner), i could not fix the problem. i decided to give up, after all it is only one game, and everything else was fine. later, towards the end of the day, whilst dling on edonkey, my b0x crashed with a strange red line at the top of the screen. i was surprised by this, as usually my system is stable. i pressed reset, and waited for windows to load... a black screen of death said hello to me... it was an 'IRQ_LESSTHAN_OR_EQUAL_TO' kind of thing, sounded like a ram error to me. (black screen was like a blue, but with black bg, white text and less info). after pressing reset again, i did not hear a happy, single, short beep from the system speaker, i got BEEEEEEEEP, BEEEEEEEP, BEEEEP, after diging out mobo manual, i discovered this error was 'no ram detected'. i reseated both sticks, making sure to blow off any dust etc that might have found its way in to any connections. once again, i got the same beeping error. now, this is hard to describe, so i will call peices of ram A and B. i took out A, from the 2nd slot in mobo (asus a7m255 revision 0.4) and the b0x would still not boot. after putting back A and removing B from the 1st slot on mobo, i could get past POST and in to windows. perhaps that peice of ram has been causing the problem, and it has finally destr0yed its self? to test this theory i loaded up wc3 and was confronted with this same buggered up gfx error. hmmmm. gfx ram is also buggered? or could it be that stick A of ram is a bit busted also!?!?! to test if the problem is due to the gfx card, i got out my trusty gf2 ultra from days of old and replaced gf4 with it. the gfx error was still there... gf4 went back in. after that, i went to sleep, as it was getting late and i was too tired to be messing about inside case. today i have noticed more errors, such as this one... now, with my b0x running on 256mb of ram, and with these strange errors, i wonder if my only working peice of ram is also faulty, or perhaps, it could be the mobo that has actually busted, and is causing all this, perhaps cooking one of the sticks of ram. i can imagine one peice of ram messing up in a day, but not two. well, as i said, i have no clue wtf could be wrong here, anyone? thanks for reading such a bunch of bad english ;)
tomwarren Veteran Posted July 2, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 2, 2002 Well i read it all, doesnt seem like its your GFX card if your GF2 did the same and UT works fine so i am guessing yes its your RAM OR MOBO, wot RAM are you using? Same make for Stick A and B? Seems like stick B has ****ed and stick A might have nearly ****ed too
Max
thanks, A, the working one is some strange brand i have never heard of and B, the busted, is micron. both are 256mb ddr pc2100. such a strange problem, i say.
adam2001
If your mobo was going the way of Davey Jones's locker then you would be seeing lots of errors and not just ones in specific places, like that game i would of thought. Replace all your RAM and it should be sorted. Oh yeah and get the same makes of ram this time. It would be better all round. I recommend Crucial ram (Micron) http://www.crucial.com
KC
that don't come out around here til the 3. I would say it's your ram. I would be scared to buy new ram in fear of the mobo killing it to.
Max
hmm yeah, i cannot return ram, as it is past that date. it would be so bad if i were to buy two new sticks, only for them to be fuxx0red by mobo. oh yeh, i have also noticed that textures seem so bad in 3dmark2001. they are all pixelated etc, where before they were perfect... can graphical errors such as this actually be put down to faulty ram!? AMDTBurnt
definitely.... but I would be afraid of mobo cooking new RAM.
sailgreg
Was it getting cooled properly? How often do you use the computer? I think it is the second ram stick that is causing the problems, but I am not sure :(
Max
b0x is on if i am awake. i would say cooling is good, cpu runs hot, but that is due to overclocking, everything else is c00l due to the many fans i have.
SYBOLD
i think your cpu is the problem because it send's the data to the ram and your cpu is overclocked so that's the problem. lower your cpu speed to normal.
