it's system wide. Or at least it will be by beta 2

You activate it by going into accessories, and accessibaily I think...I think its a pain in the ass imo. Doesnt work real well, maybe it will get better in final versions.

My cellphone has speech recognition (meaning it listens to what I say, and write it down in a text message, media message, webpage, etc), so Vista is very late :p

I like it for some things but sometimes, like most speech recognition, it just does NOT seem to get things.... I like it tho... the one command that I can never seem to get to work tho are the scroll down and scroll upetc. commands... Oh and also with the mousegrid I can click and stuff but with the dragging the mouse will go to the two places but won't drag anything.

Either way I like it.

Oh and the other thing that bugs me about it... sometimes when trying to select something in the start menu it thinks that I'm trying to search so it will treat what I'm saying as dictation... In contrast I can't seem to get it to let me use Dictation in MSN Messenger

EDIT: Also whenever I re-open the speech app or completely stop it from listening (not sleep but stop listening) and then start it listening again for some reason the system device for recording goes from microphone to line in... anyone know why?

I would love to use this feature, however I cannot get my sound drivers working! Bah!

OS X 10.4 has a very similar feature, and it's QUITE nifty, i'm hoping Vista's implementation will blow it away though.

If it were uber advanced, id find it very nifty. For example i might not be at my computer. However, i go "computer, play... " and it does. That would be very useful.

I could be elsewhere in my room, lying in bed, etc. Or if this was implemented in media centre as well

Well, unless you're handicapped, I think navigating the UI in the traditional way is clearly more faster and accurate. The voice support in the Opera browser was a fun gimmick to play around with for a while, but I can't see how Vista's support will ever become more than that for people who can use a human interface device.

They should totally get Majel Barett to do a computer voice for Vista.

Microsoft would be praised by geeks everywhere and it would undoubtedly raise sales!
