multiple ie windows open & crash windows

Recommended Posts

Hi,

occasionally ~56 IE windows suddenly spring open and crash my system making some things inaccessible until i do a hard reboot. when i close one IE window, two more open!! when i close any other open program window two more open!!

while i can still use some open programs, others crash and cant be used (or even closed). menus like 'programs' from the start menu, ctrl+alt+del, right click, and some keyboard shortcuts refuse to respond.

i have done full system scans with all my security software and turned up nothing. so pretty sure its not malware causing it.

some IE windows have nothing in the address bar, and others have the link to a page i have visited (or am visiting in firefox, not sure) but all pages fail to load as if the user canceled them.

ive no idea what could be causing it. i dont even have to have ie open for it to happen. am i being dos attacked perhaps??

any ideas???

thanks in advance...

im on a home network - 1 pc wired to router (linksys wag54g), notebook connected wirelessly.

both computers: XP SP2, NIS05, a-squared, spyware blaster, spybot, adaware, spyware guard. most browsing done in firefox. everything (not limited to the above) are latest versions and are kept as up-to-date as possible.

ive made quite a few registry tweaks, including disabling hidden shares, the IPC$ tweak, and hardening tcp/ip settings.

my wireless router uses wpa tkip and restricts access by mac address, as well as some other secured settings (logon, ssid, etc).

all my windows passwords are very secure. my other passwords need changing, but theres no indication theyve been compromised

and overall my security is pretty good.

(apart from potential hazards such as using kazaa lite, visiting potentially malicious websites, and using an account with admin privilages).
