Something I heard on the news today, would like to hear everyone's views on it.

Specifically, should Muslim extremists who openly support and encourage terrorism be charged with treason?

Looking forward to your opinions on the issue.

NB: Please do not make any racist or derrogatory comments towards other religions, let's keep this an adult debate

The death penalty for treason was revoked in 1998 when we signed that human rights treaty. It's now life imprisonment, without parole...

This is a very tough one. Although I'll go against my heart and vote No, because we can't sink to their levels. We must go on living as if nothing happened. That means keeping free speech, which is part of the base of our society.

Also if anything happens to these guys they'll become martyrs and their message would suddenly become much stronger. The only way to stop them would be to make them disappear without traces, which of course is impossible in democratic countries.

I voted yes. I want to make clear, I support free speech, I even support people's right to rally support to rebel against the government, but I don't support people blowing up busses or airplanes of civilians.

Life with no parole is fair enough for people openly advocating suicide attacks and bombings of civilian soft targets in my opinion, I'd even be OK with killing them TBH. It's not like you can ever have someone live safely in your neighborhood when he thinks you're an infidel and killing you will grant him special treatment.

They wanna protest the UK involvement in the Iraq War, fine, they want to organize an Army to overthrow the crown, fine, they want to kill some families going to work, not fine.

I think ultimately though the preachers themselves don't have the balls to do that, they need uneducated, slightly dim, unhappy parishioners to do it for them. Just remember that's what the USSR did (make the citizen who disagreed with the regime "disappear").

I thought this myself the other day and asked my Mum about it.

I think it is treason just for the reasons you said, and yeah I thought we still carried the Death Penalty for it.

FloatingFatMan - Is it the "Life imprisonment" which actualy means we give you 18 years but you can get out on 7 becasue you showed good behaviour? Or is it full life in and never come out?

I'm not 100% certain, but as I understand it, it depends entirely on the home secretary rather than the judge, but is usually life without chance of parole.... ever... Throw away the key and all that...

TBH. not sure I want my tax paying pounds to contribute to keeping these kind of people in a comfortable prison cell for the rest of their lives...
