[science ..kinda] What would happen..

Would we notice any immediate effects..  like.. being thrown from the face of the planet?  the rotation instantly stops. Would we simply not notice the sudden deceleration until we realize daytime is lasting too long?

The centripetal force provided by the gravitational force will no longer hold us on the Earth and all matter on the surface (And maybe inside the Earth itself) will move tangentially away from the Earth at that instant.

In a nutshell - We'd be all dead and you will no longer have satellite TV or cable TV for that matter.

Well... I sure wish that the rotation would slow down a bit... having 30 hour days would be really nice, since I work better with longer days and longer sleeps... :p

But as for the long term effects, everything living on this earth would probably die, except for in the small region where the sun is right on the horizon or just above.

Plants would then simply grow in the direction of the sun, somewhat similar to what Sunflowers do right now (sunflowers will turn throughout the day to follow the sun). Animals would have to adapt to the lack of darkness for the purpose of sleeping. Right now, all animals (humans included) go through chemical changes throughout the day that trigger waking up and sleeping. These chemical changes are triggered by... you guessed it... sunlight.

A lot of wierd **** would happen... that's about the extent of it... :p

I believe the planet rotates at 1,000+ mph. If it suddenly stopped the atmosphere would still be spinning at that rate. Add to that the heat build up (and freezing) since the "day/night" cycle would be 365 times longer... Not good.

if earth suddenly stopped everything would be thrown in the direction of earths rotation at the rotational speed of earth at that particular location.

Without the earth's rotation there is no coriolis effect. So you can say goodbye to the thermohaline circulation and our temperate climate in Europe. The effect upon oceanic and atmospheric circulation would be catastrophic, the lack of turning force given to volumes of water and air would change everything.

In the short term yes, but as the earth is not rotating at all then throughout the year each face of the earth will be shown to the sun. So in effect you would have day's that are a full year long. But if you were at whichever pole was experiencing winter at the time you would be stuck with darkness forever, the opposite also applies.

all in all, youd crap your pants really quick if the earth stopped, or even if it slowed down by 500/MPh
