bangbang023 Veteran Posted July 29, 2005 Veteran Share Posted July 29, 2005 I just received my OneCare beta package (install disc, 2 blank discs, product key) and, before I installed, was wondering if anyone else has installed it yet and can provide feedback on if it slows their system down, by a noticeable degree. While MS is a little vague about it, I'm almost certain this contains an anti-virus so I really want to know what to expect before just uninstalling Trend Micro all willy nilly, like that. The two blank discs are to be used to test out the backup features. Kind of nice of them to supply them instead of making me have to go buy some. TimRogers
I'm using it now. It hasn't slowed down my system at all and is very good for backups. Though the firewall wasn't too great though!
Meshuggah
I installed it via the online method, still awaiting the disc. It hasn't slowed down my computer at all, but i did disable the firewall

ThunderRiver
You know.. I never really understand why people get to receive CDs and some don't. For example, I haven't been notified that I will receive the CD. All they say is to install it off the web.
#Michael
Personally, I have been using the fully package of onecare and I haven't been noticing anything. I still think the firewall is too basic, but I think they are marketing it to the people who don't know so much. @ThunderRiver: They are doing that because there is going to be multiple ways to buy and install onecare once it goes gold. I am actually part of a select group that gets to use a prepaid CC supplied by MSN to buy a subscription to WOC and install via the web and test how it works that way. Hurmoth
The firewall is the only real big problem I have with it. Every time I reboot my system it tells me that the firewall is disabled and I should enable it for better protection  Telling me this once every week, month, or even better, year is one thing, but every day and/or time I reboot my system is annoying me. I hope Microsoft goes with OneCare for MSN Premium subscribers. I like McAfee and all, I just think that OneCare looks more feature packed. jadkins555
http://beta.microsoft.com/content/bphome.asp 586294139[/snapback] I follow that link and it says I am enrolled in the OneCare beta. I then click the link to install and it says it is only for approved beta participants. Odd.

bangbang023 Veteran Posted July 31, 2005 Author Veteran Share Posted July 31, 2005 I'm liking it. It ran a biweekly test this morning and found a few emails, in my Thunderbird archives, that contained possible malware. PC-Cillin didn't detect these
jadkins555
For the users accepted into beta, when you go into beta.microsoft.com -> modify your info, what does it say under OneCare? Mine says "Contact Info: Windows OneCare Live: Windows OneCare Beta - Group 3", yet I have never received any mail/email regarding confirmation of the beta. I'm trying to figure out if this is a mistake or if I am really in it. Maybe group 3 hasn't been officially invited yet?

ZenPirate
I'm also in Group 2. I really think OnCare is going to end up on the parents laptop when this is released. I'm liking it so far. -BTW, I sent an email asking them to put an option in for scanning individual files.

bitsonic
Yes, Onecare does slow down system sometimes. I have used it for a month. Sometimes I noticed its anti-virus process use all my CPU. But in most of time, it works fine. I have P3 733 CPU.
