SDRAM Video in DDR MB & Visa Versa

Recommended Posts

Let me explain my situation first.

I'm running a AMD Athlon XP 1600+ w/ 512MB of PC2100 DDR-RAM. When I first got this setup back in November, I put in a GeForce2 MX 400 w/ 64MB of SDRAM.

The problem was that during 3D games, my system would usually lock up and die. It would even lock up when my screensaver would run for more than a few minutes (I run the giant 3D WinXP one) -- If I set my FSB down from 133 to 100, my system ran just fine. The only problem was, instead of running at 1400MHz like it was suppose to, my processor only ran at 1050MHz.

A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine upgraded his GeForce2 GTS/Pro to a GeForce4 Ti 4400, and put his old GTS into an old PII 333MHz system with SDRAM.

Yesterday, I convinced him to switch out cards with me, so that he got the MX and I got the GTS (I threw in network card he needed to sweeten the deal ;) ) -- the GTS has 64MB of DDR ram on board, and after getting it installed in my computer, I decided to see if I could bump my FSB back up to 133.

I did, and it worked, and I havn't crashed since.

So, I guess to make a long story short, is their any validity to my theory that SDRAM and DDR don't mix with you swap them on MB's and graphics cards, or am I just lucky?

could have been a lot of things really, drivers, usually problems with higher FSB is a power problem, maybe the new card used less power.

Same drivers, and the GTS is a better and faster card with more bandwidth, wouldn't that require more power than a MX card?
