Bhav
i'm 'jain'...a stricter version of hindu (we believe in a different god too). we can't eat vegetables that have grown in the ground because animals may have lived in them, and so we may kill them by digging up for the veg. milk is considered holy because it's come from a cow. consequently we're not supposed to eat cheese or yogurt either, unless it has been made in a certain way (bit strange imo, because either way you make it, you're still drinking milk). I personally don't follow most of my religious teachings. It's way too extreme for me, and seems even more extreme than veganism. i don't want to cause this topic to trail, but... the major problem with my religion is that many people are taught to such extremes that they make themselves ill, or even die. if they do die, however, many followers of jainism think it's a blessing because he/she has died in the presense of god! this sort of glorifying of death, and the best way to die, is completely wrong imo. Laurë Veteran Posted August 10, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 10, 2005 Semi-Omnivore considering vegetarianism for health benefits (more research required though). I tried being a vegetarian once, simply because I do not enjoy eating most meats. However some meats I do like and my step dad was not very supportive, which made it even harder. I wasn't allowed substitutes or any 'special' foods, so I literally had to starve myself and really limit my diet. However, that is no longer an issue and I hardly eat any meat now, so I'm reconsidering, at least so I can make my diet healthier.
leaving_
eggcorn - If dog tasted good I'd eat it. Korea does it, why cant we? :p 586357016 I'd consider eating it if I knew it had been raised in a lab, grown from a tube, etc. And I think you mean something like, people who live in Korea eat dog meat :ninja: As for the 'we' - I'm not an American, but hey, eat what you want. Perhaps you'd enjoy a place that allowed you to choose the dog you wanted to eat before they slaughtered it - like choosing lobster. Farstrider
What about a "No Red Meat" option? What about an "I'm married to a vegetarian but I cheat when she isn't looking"? 586356756 Anyone who tells me what I can and can not eat, and how I must leave the toilet seat, will not last very long with me! One of my people who work for me is Muslum and he tried this pork thing with me and I had to also tell him that what I eat is no concern of his! Sorry just had to make this point! I've heard that there are many beans that can substitute for the protein normal people get from meat, so I do think it is possible to be a veg and at the same time live a very healthy and energetic life.I consider my self a omnivore, although I could live off potatoes my entire life (I really, really love potatoes), I just don't think I would be very healthy if I did. Also, for the animal loving vegs out there; animals die in nature all the time anyway, so I don't think it matters if we kill more ;). 586357092 The Inca society (Aztecs) ate potatoes all year round. Potatoes are fine to eat, it is just the stuff we normally cook them in that makes it unhealthy. Milk and potatoes can almost sustain you completely on their own! This food is very low in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Iron and Manganese, and a very good source of Copper. [hxc]
i'm a vegetarian mostly for nutritional reasons. i try to eat very organically to cut them chemicals out of my diet. meat is pumped full of hormones to make it grow and chemicals to make it's shelf life longer. i'm also against inhumane slaughter houses, at least respect the animal that is giving up it's life for yours. mcnelson
I'm vegetarian for moral reasons - I couldn't kill an animal, so refuse to eat them. I reckon if people had to kill the animals they ultimately ate, they'd be a whole load more vegetarians in the world.

AionXn_
You know being a vegetarian isn't all about eating vegetables every meal. Theres soybean "meat" that you could buy from chinese stores. If you know how to cook, replace your recipes that need meat with the soybean "meat". It will taste just like meat but it wont be. My family eats meat and they always buy those fake meat. My mom is a great cook and she makes every meal very delicious. If you think of McDonald's veggie burger, it's like that. I know lots of people that are vegetarians but they just eat vegetables all day :x If you go search around, I'm sure you'll find some soybean "meat" =) I eat everything. Any food that I've never tasted I will try :)
