Spielo
It does make me laugh when Americans complain about the price of fuel; thought to say that it's soooo much more expensive here is a little misleading; 70% of the price we pay in the UK is due to tax, and not for the petrol itself. Still, prices here are insane, with petrol between ?0.90 and ?1.00 per litre now. My advice, if you're in tthe US, spare a thought for us brits, if you're in the UK, consider that the petrol you buy is still cheaper than 55p for a 500ml bottle of Evia:D:D If Americans want to spent less on fuel, the first thing they should do is stop buying such ****ty cars. Last week's episode of Top Gear said that the Ford F150 is the best selling car in the world, despite it only being sold in North America. So you guys in the states must be buying an awful lot of those ****ty things. They're clearly bloody awful cars, I couldn't believe how shoddily built they were, and with five litre engines and all that horsepower (and no thought to safety!) they can't possibly be a sensible choice! People buy want they like. "****ty" is merely an opinion, and we are all entitled to having our own opinions. While we Americans love to buy whatever we want, and we usually do, we are responsible for it. I'm not trying to be a prick to you here, but if someone were to buy an F-150it's there own problemb> that they have to pay for more gasoline because of bad truck gas mileage. I want a truck, not an F-150, but I still want one. However, gasoline prices do keep me from ever buying one at this point (it would be 2-3 times as much annually for gas). So, if Americans want to stop spending so much on fuel, we need to take it up with ourselves. Everyone knows what they buy and how ****ty some things they buy can be, and therefore, it is personal problemi>, not a national problem. It just so happens that most of the nation here doesn't think economically anymore. Just make sure you don't go accusing a whole nation of making senseless choices, even if it is about buying a car that is not economical. Oh, and gas around my city is $2.59 per gallon. John S. Veteran Posted August 9, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 9, 2005 It's amazing how much we fuss and just how contrived we Americans are. We'll pay $1.00 for a 16-ounce bottle of water, $3-5.00 for a cup of coffee, but whine when gas approaches $2.50 a gallon
pyehac
Last time I checked, there was a gas station in my area that was selling for $2.47 (and that was the cheapest there). Near my school, I've seen it $.10 cents higher, at $2.57. Oh, and I'm in Hawaii. ;)
ragingtoad
Paying $2.85 here in Los Angeles for cheapest. I dont mind CA taxing for the cleaner fuel. The fact is the price will only go up not down. You just have to adjust your lifestyle. Far to many Americans live way beyond their means.
Spielo
I'm not trying to be a prick to you here, but if someone were to buy an F-150, it's there own problem that they have to pay for more gasoline because of bad truck gas mileage.586351827 I beg to differ, people driving uneconomical cars is everyone's problem! Besides the obvious environmental impact of driving such vehicles, it's pretty clear to see that if everyone drove more economical cars, demand would be significantly lower and fuel wouldn't be such a highly valued commodity. Lower demand and less reliance on petrol would mean the the limited stocks our world has would hold out longer, and prices would be lower. So people driving horrendously uneconomical cars creates a problem that results in everyone having the pay the price (literally!). Just make sure you don't go accusing a whole nation of making senseless choices, even if it is about buying a car that is not economical. Oh, and gas around my city is $2.59 per gallon.586351827 I didn't say "All americans drive ridiculously gargantuan vehicles and are therefore solely to blame for the problem", the growing popularity of cars such as the Toyota Prius in the US shows that there's several people who'd like to do their part to alleviate the situation; but the fact that the F-150 is the biggest selling car in the world, and it's only available in North America shows that the US and Canada does have a big appetite for horrendously wasteful, poorly build and rather unsafe vehicles. At a guess, I'd say that the average engine size for a typical European car is probably 1.8l, or quite possibly less. I sincerely doubt the same could be said for the US, and this is a large contributer to the problem of increasing petrol prices.

briangw
Compared to what sort of car? What sort of mileage are we talking here? 586351882 I had a 4 cylinder 89, dodge pickup that had about as good mileage as my wife's Ford Aspire. tlogank
I have a VW Jetta Diesel which is freaking awesome. My diesel is about $2.18/gallon. It costs $27 to fill up, and that will go about 3 weeks or 500+ miles. You can't beat that!

Dr Pete
What I find totally amazing is the bull the networks feed us about the cost of gasoline going up because of the price of crude oil in 1 day. So can someone explain to me why if I pay more for a barrel of crude oil TODAY, TONIGHT the price of gas goes up? How fast do they refine the stuff and pass the cost on to the consumers. Or are the oil companies really screwing us? (Edit, Oh ya last week I paid 2.45 for regular and 4 days later its $2.59) Southern California

Bhav
Or are the oil companies really screwing us? 586352051 suppose it swings both ways. you could think of it as the oil companies sneakily trying to keep the prices higher for longer, so as to make a bigger profit. but on the other hand, it could be a precautionary measure, so that usage is reduced but income is still relatively normal.
