TBH, is anyone here really surprised? Think about it... If MS release an antispyware application (or anti-virus) free of charge, they will IMMEDIATELY be hit with anti-trust lawsuits from companys which make commercial versions of such applications, such as McAfee, Symantec etc...

The ONLY way MS can get away with releasing software of this genre is to charge for it. It's kind of a shame that is seems they're going to integrate it with One Care and drop the stand-alone version, but it's not surprising you're going to have to PAY for it!

Hey psyhc, unless you were part of the chat last night, which I doubt you were, I don't think you truly know what that entire chat encompassed.

I think it was rather stupid of neowin people to post that picture without the rest of the chat because it it didn't reveal the questions asked/answered before and after it.

There is a reason why it is free now, it is in BETA TESTING, they need people to TEST it, so of course it is going to be free. The program does have a timebomb in it.

If you don't like it, get over it, there are plenty of other programs left to use, nobody is forcing to use MS product.

No need to be so defensive, man.

Besides, who cares if the MS product ever hits? There are plenty of free alternatives that aren't limited to just 2K and XP.

they should make it like $5 or something stupid

that way they get a little bit back, and its amazingly good value

plus they cant be charged with shipping it on every new computer [as was with IE]

God, would you guys pay attention?

The beta builds have an expiration date. After that date you'll have to upgrade to the final version or be left with an unusable piece of software. It's called a timebomb, and lots of beta/prerelease programs have them. It does NOT mean AntiSpyware is going away. It will be included in Windows OneCare in the future (read the answer he gave).

Guess the Neowin News poster jumped the gun a bit, eh?

Sometimes hunting for exclusives can lead to bad info, I suppose.

I highly doubt it will be dropped, they want to clean up peoples computers... Otherwise their product looks like a POS to the regular user who doesn't know the difference of why thier computer is slow, they think damn this windows xp/vista is so slow, damn it!

You can't go out and say publically say it will be free and change your mind.... Not smart at all

What i think they/he will do is make a "basic" version free, and then have more advanced versions that will cost or come with one care.

I don't understand the problem.

Microsoft allows in the latest version to hold the antispyware until the end of the year (2005)

after that i don't have any idea what will happen, but i don't see why not make it a paid product. most of the more successful products - ad-aware, webroot spyware blaster (that is all i can think of) you need to pay for. and i don't think microsoft will launch out a software with open source... so...

ive already read like a billion articles on this question in the past week... if anyone paid any attention to the news on neowin or anywhere else for that matter.. they would already know this to be false.

Wonder why Neowin didn't print a retraction?

Because at Neowin......unprofessionalism looks better. To print a retraction would be professional and that would go against everything Neowin stands for.

Besides Neowin gets more press by posting stories like this and leaving it like that.
