ROYGBIV
When I'm using Vista the colour is 4-bit on the lowest. I downloaded the drivers from ati.com, but I still get the same thing, really low screen resolution and 4-bit colour. I have a Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB video card and a Samtron 76V monitor. I'm going to need Ethernet drivers also, but I want to at least get a better view before I continue with my testing adventure. I did a search here, but didn't reallly find anything. Just things on Radeon's and DWM.
Commodore Max
Is there only 4-bit available in Display Properties ? Cause even with the built-in drivers I could get at least 16-bit ...
Morgan
LOL I didn't even know they had 4-bit :(
stephen_0002
OUCH That bites..... even with no Drivers in Windows98 ..they give you 2 options... 16bit and 2 bit....
ROYGBIV
Nope, only options I had was the resolution size of 640x480 and 4-bit colour. Morgan, I didn't even know they had 4-bit either until this little problem, we learn new things every day I guess. So I'm guessing there isn't a fix since it looks like everyone is getting default choices of higher colours. There goes my will to test, no way I'm working in 4-bit. petroid
OUCH That bites.....? even with no Drivers in Windows98 ..they give you 2 options... 16bit and 2 bit.... 586369112[/snapback] Windows with vgasave drivers allows 2-bit (four colors) and 4-bit (16 colors.), 16-bit color would be 65536 colors... As for Windows running in 16 color mode, chances are the driver install is a bit suspect. A sign of this is that the driver will show up in device manager as fine and dandy, but if you open the Display control applet and head to the settings tab, it will say somthing like "Default Monitor on " and trail off there without mentioning the name of the video card. When you hit advanced and check the adapter tab it will tell you that it is using VgaSave drivers. You can try and re-install the drivers, or use a different set. If it still doesn't work I'd put it down to simple beta incompatabilities. Edited August 13, 2005 by petroid
Angel Blue01
Even the WinXP safe mode has 16-bit color! I have gotten this, but usually its when a program that uses 4-bit crashes.
ROYGBIV
I figured out my problem :). I was running Vista on VMware and I did not know that I had to install VMTools and not the ATI drivers. Once I installed VMTools everything went smoothly and I quickly gained 32-bit colour with Internet access. For the life of me I can't figure out any of these new features. I mean the only things I've noticed are the new theme and improved start menu. I also noticed a Parental Control which I would of fooled around with if Vista would let you create Limited accounts. I hope Beta 2 includes all these new things as so far Vista is just XP with a couple of changes to me.
Commodore Max
It's a beta. Come on, you can't expect to have every feature, especially if you are using VmWare !

Quarzimodo
Yeah!!! I've got Virtual Machine Additions installed and now it works just fine. Still my sound card doesn't work and it's very slow but it's great. The only major problem I have now is that my two additional virtual hard disks that I've created don't seem to work. Vista don't display them in the computer window.

Let me know if this works.
