Good news, bad news

I've discovered a new feature in Vista, the hard way. I haven't seen it discussed here or elsewhere so I'm not sure if anyone knows about it.

Vista will popup a screeen warning you of imminent hard drive failure if your disk fails a SMART test. I have rebooted into XP and confirmed this by using a third party SMART monitoring tool. It also reports a CRITICAL DRIVE CONDITION!

It's a nice new feature to add to an OS, but a crappy way to discover it.

Well it's an old 30G disk with a lot of bad sectors and needs to be replaced anyway. I just got done reinstalling and retweaking XP on it though.

In a way, you're lucky. But then, you're not.

Time for you to get a new HDD !

How exactly was it a "crappy way to discover it"? The feature did it's job. It's not like you discovered that you had an airbag by getting into an accident with your car. Now *that* would be a crappy occasion :p
