WinAMP5 + Vista = no good?

Recommended Posts

Like the topic description says, after I start playing Winamp, an error box will pop up saying that "Winamp stopped working and must be closed." Thing is, Winamp will continue to play music correctly, except I can't control Winamp anymore afterwards. Why is this? Anyone else experience the same thing? Work around?

My specs is as follows:

A64 S939 3000+

1 gig pc3200 ram

gigabyte k8ns ultra

using the onboard audio, which is alc850, since audigy 2 doesn't work correctly on vista. (neither does this it seems)

a little update. i just jumped onto my other machine and tested out winamp on that rig. and it worked fine!

that rig is running soundstorm, so i am guessing the problem is the sound device. shucks.

i guess i am hoping for a workaround.

just to help others, but which chipset is your audio?

also, is your direct sound working?

Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA Audio Control

(OnBoard sound for Gigabyte VIA KT800 Mainboard)

Windows Vista automatically detected the hardware and installed the drivers, the supplied drivers that came with the mainboard also work fine.

And yeah, I'm using Direct sound.

I have JetAudio working currently and also have tried out Winamp5. Both seem to work fine. Although the sound starts cracking when CPU usage increases. This prob happens if u have DirectSound as output. If u use normal waveOut, everything will work just fine !!

derr... still not working right for me. wtf. strangeness.

winamp 2 works fine though. i checked MS's database, and apparently, it's a known problem for many with WinAMP5.

oh well. no pretty skin for me for now.

I have same problem, but only in "user" mode.

I set ntfs permission to "Winamp" directory to users modify and after OK.

You'd have more luck getting support from Nullsoft. Vista is a beta, and people don't realize that. You can't expect everything to work out-of-the box! And there is a reason why it doesn't work perfectly:

The General Public is *not* supposed to get access to Beta versions. They are reserved to a group of people who have proven their technological skills and that have the right computer to try it out.

That said,

Try getting support from Nullsoft, and if you are an official tester, you should post this inside the Microsoft Connect newsgroups instead, since the people there are much more likely to have information about this problem.

My advice to you is to try to update your sound drivers manually, to try to push a couple of buttons and set NTFS permissions for it.

Good luck to you ;) !

Yo I get this on XP SP2, simply completely untinstall Winamp then re-install it, seems to fix it 95% of the time.. DONT just re-install over the existing one as that wont do nothing :p
